Man gets life for bludgeoning roommate to death with a baseball bat

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Cristian Rodriguez, 38, of first-degree murder for the death of Roosevelt Harris in the Tremont Street home they shared, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The jury rejected Rodriguez's argument that he was too mentally ill to know what he was doing when he used a metal baseball bat to smash Harris in the head until he died, the DA's office reports. The verdict means life in prison without possibility of parole.

The two had long bickered over issues such as money and missing food from the house's shared kitchen - Rodriguez had previously punched Harris in the face after accusing him of stealing food, prosecutors said.

On Feb. 9, 2012, other tenants:

Heard a series of loud bumps; one resident also heard a voice call out and identified the voice as Harris’. When he rushed to Harris’ room, he found Harris lying on his back with severe trauma to his head and face.

Witnesses saw Rodriguez toss the metal bat in a trash can. The bat, along with the rest of the trash, was incinerated before police could examine it, but police found a trash worker who "recalled seeing the bat and noticed brownish stains on its surface," the DA's office says.

Honk if I'm paying for your life. Just execute the piece of crap and donate his organs to the needy.

In states that allow for the death penalty it costs the state far more to kill them then to just let them rot in jail. So if your desire is to save the state money jail would be the value option.

Don't confuse Will with facts. You know how much he gets off on fantasies of violence.

Yeah but people like Will here will just think that means we should hang 'em at high noon the next day, damn the appeals, and all.

If there were 500 more law schools the education would be a lot cheaper and we'd have a lot more lawyers, who would drive down the cost of legal services.

It's the time involved, what with automatic appeals and the like.

Really?

REALLY?

Lots of law school graduates who pass bar exams never find legal jobs. And those that do ofteen are not well paid. While the _average_ salary for lawyers is high, this is because of a relatively small percentage of EXTREMELY highly paid partners in prestigious, politically-well-connected firms. The _median_ salary for lawyers isn't nearly so impressive -- and lots really just scrape by.

Note: new hires at super-prestigious law firms typically are paid more than most attorneys will make after decades of working as an attorney.

So if you really want to save some money, life imprisonment is actually cheaper.

I don't think will believes in the expensive appeals process

... wouldn't mind lynching based on mere suspicion -- as long as it would kill lots of undesirables cheaply/

How do you incinerate a metal bat?

pretty easily when heated enough. And I've not yet heard of a steel baseball bat.

Terrible. Don't know if it'll stop, either.

? Because at first glance it doesn't look premeditated, more like a fit of passion, heat of quarrel type murder. Second degree material.
Horrible all the same, and I can't really shed too many tears for Rodriguez.
