Closed Roslindale Square restaurants to be replaced by new food places

Effie's Kitchen in Roslindale Square

Workers have been busy lately getting the old Wapo Taco on Poplar Street and the former Bel Lounge on Washington Street for new tenants.

The new sign for Eftimia Meletlides's Effie's Kitchen went up this week above the former Wapo Taco, which closed in June after its landlord doubled its rent. Like Wapo Taco, it looks to be more of a takeout place than a sit-down restaurant.

Across from the Dunkin' Donuts on Washington Street, meanwhile, workers have been busy gutting the old Bel Lounge - in particular, ripping out most of its internal walls. No clue on what the building's new owners - Mark and Jeremy Salzberg and Noah Steinberg, all of Newton - have in store for the building, but Roslindale Village Main Street recently wrote in its e-mail that they have "big plans" and that the revamped building will look like this:

I understand it's frustrating to see long standing businesses to leave due to rent increases, but I'm glad to see a new tenant already. We'll see if the rent is low enough to support the business that opens - that space which was a phone store, barber shop, shoe store, etc... on Corinth has steadily flipped for years due to high rent I think.

The old Christos convenience store space on South/Walter is also being worked on -that's a coffee shop going in, right?

A lot of people in Roslindale have lamented the lack of a good Greek restaurant given the deep ties to Greece in the area, so it's great to have something like this.

This is awesome! Can't wait to see what's going in that old lounge -- it's such an eyesore right now. Hell, I'd rather have another bank than what's there now.

Has anybody heard any updates on the restaurant that's supposed to go into the substation? I know the apartments are almost done (and up on various rental sites) but have they started any work on the station?
