Dic Donohue returns to duty - and a promotion

Dic Donohue, the Transit Police officer injured in the gun battle with the Tsarnaevs that Friday after the Marathon bombings, returned to work today - and a promotion to sergeant. His parents put his collar insignia on at a ceremony this morning at Transit police headquarters.

Did they ever figure out which officer shot him? There were a few stories but then they dried up - I think they were trying to figure out if the shots came from Watertown PD or MBTA weapons

It's the blue wall of silence, and we'll never know. No doubt the shooter feels pretty terrible about it.
So many people were shooting so wildly...
... I suspect the actual shooter has no idea that he was the one who shot this officer.
Might be better that way
Not knowing which individual fired the shot puts the onus on improving the response to such events, rather than the blame on a single person.

Wouldn't the ballistics have been tested to know who did the shooting, if only to know that it wasn't one of the Tsarnaevs?
No, that would ruin
the narrative! As indicated by the recent report on that evening, it was essentially a free for all. This was not a precision based tactical maneuver, it was a bunch of trigger happy cops and poor Dic got caught in the crossfire.

I'm glad this officer survived but what was a T cop doing at the Watertown shootout? Self-deployment?
Active shooter response = all
Active shooter response = all hands on deck regardless of whose payroll you're on. In a confined area, the first officers to arrive form a team, organize on the spot and move right in. Basically, shoot first and figure out jurisdiction later. Remember there was also a situation where officers mistakenly opened fire on a vehicle that contained a BPD officer and a Statie together. BPD had overall command of the entire situation even though it went down in Cambridge/Watertown.
Besides all that, MBTA police has a wider area of jurisdiction anyway (anywhere the T is) than any singular municipal force. So he was well within his duties to be on hand.
