A hot time at the Pru today

Welding a beam at new Prudential Center building in Boston's Back Bay

A worker did welding on a beam today in what will be one of the entrances to the Prudential Center on Boylston Street after the completion of the building now under construction where the plaza in front of the food court used to be.

Hope the photographer is using eye protection, or a telephoto lens.

PSA: eye damage from a welding arc is mitigated at >50 ft but staring at a welding arc from any distance should be minimized.

Like two or three stories down and a fair distance away from being underneath the girder. So props to the zoom on my camera (the equivalent of 3x on a point-and-shoot, I think) and, probably more important, the camera's decent sensor. Here's what the original image looked like before I cropped it to show the welder:

I just can't stop thinking that there was no need to fill up the courtyard of the prudential center with another building. No more outdoor seating (not that it matters with the food court gone!), no more outdoor iceskating or farmers markets.

Does the back bay really need one more building?
