It's Boston Public Schools for College Prep

Boston Public schools are doing a better job than Boston Charter schools preparing students for admission to college.

Next time you hear a Charter schools expansion advocate (which in turn causes the closing of a Boston Public neighborhood school) talk about excellence in education, be sure to tell them that Boston Public schools do a better job than Boston Charter schools preparing students to matriculate to college.

And how do these students perform in college you ask? Once again, Boston Public school students outperform Boston Charter school students, by a bigger margin.

I think it's time for Boston Charter school advocates to stop telling the "education excellence" lie. That includes the flacks at the conservative Koch-funded pro-privatization "think tank" Charlie Baker started his career at, Pioneer Institute.

We also know that if we raise the charter cap, it will close good public schools.

So why are we funding two systems, the second system by taking funds from the first when the way we finance charters quite clearly harms good public schools? Maybe that's the endgame.

If you oppose privatizing the public school system, demand Beacon Hill fund charter schools without harming the public system.

You can be proud, Massachusetts has a top-rated K-12 public system, that is if we can keep it.

To close Boston Schools budget gaps that the Mayor chose not to close with funding, we've cut $108,000,000 million in resources from the budget over two years, Some of the cuts are made by asking principles to cut programs and staff. Other cuts come in the form of putting 7th graders on the MBTA and cutting the quality of the food we serve out kids and closing two neighborhood schools. Ask around. Ask Boston Schools parents what's been cut from their school over the last two years. They can tell you. It's substantial and they're getting tired of it.

Charters schools do not serve the people from a neighborhood, they serve the folks who enter the lottery and but not even all of them. More than half will leave before they graduate. The chart above shows you college matriculation from the half who made it to graduation.

Currently, charters schools are allowed to take up 18% of a school districts budget. A new ballot measured has been filed that would allow for 12 new charter schools a year above and beyond their current allowances.

The governor is also going to file legislation to lift the charter cap. And well-heeled lawyers (whose children most certainly are not in public schools) have promised to sue if the charter cap is not lifted.

This is a coordinated attack on our schools system and can lead to the dismantling of BPS if parents do not fight back. read more
