Orange Line goes cryptbound at Haymarket, weary riders say fark it

The Orange Line is a bit of a mess right now. Then again, it's Friday, and it's raining.

Pretty sad that as a T rider my first thought was just that at this point it's barely useful to report on T breakdowns because something that happens literally every day isn't "news". Can you imagine how things would shake out if entire segments of the Pike had to close down at random points in the week with no advance notice? Yeah, I can't imagine that state of affairs would be allowed to last too long. And somehow I doubt people would be clamoring to increase tolls.

Car crashes and other obscructions happen all the time. This week, all the inbound lanes of Rutherford Ave were shut during the morning rush (vehicles used the breakdown lane) after a truck rolled over. This crap happens all the time on 128. Add to that things like the decades long lane project on 128 and the repainting of the Tobin and I'm glad to be T dependent for work whenever I'm on a highway during rush hour.

The problems with the Orange Line are akin to depending on your 1982 K Car to get to work. Yes, you can do everything in the owner's manual to the letter, but you pray every time you turn the key.

1982 K Car is probably far more reliable than any of the Orange Line trains.

Upstairs at Haymarket wasn't much better. Traffic must be brutal out there.. there were at least 200+ people waiting (and more coming) for the 111. Took a few cycles of some buses to clear all the people out. And I left work, went to the gym around 3pm, and I still ended up arriving home at my normal 5:30ish time frame since I waited so long at Haymarket.

Years. Even if the MBTA were immediately showered with the $7.2B they need to get back to a good state-of-repair, it would still take years, probably a decade, to actually acquire the new equipment and/or do the necessary repair work. NASA will probably land on Mars before the T gets their shit together.

New RL and OL cars are actually on the way right now. The plan to acquire new trainsets predates Baker and predates the winter disaster. The trains have been ordered and are being built, but won't arrive until 2018. The T knows the RL/OL cars they have now are crap but there's really nothing else to do until the new cars arrive in 2018. They break down, they fix them; they break down, they fix them.

This is one of the inherent problems in democracy where our "leadership" is constantly changing every few years: Problems can take years to manifest, and years to fix, yet the guy in office right now gets the blame.
