Body of young girl found on shore at Deer Island

State and Winthrop Police are investigating the discovery of a bag containing the remains of a toddler found on the shore of Deer Island around 1 p.m.

Assistant Suffolk County District Attorney Mark Lee said the body was that of a "a young child, small."

An autopsy tomorrow may reveal how the girl died, as well as her age and race. In the meantime, authorities are appealing for any information from people who may know of a young girl who has gone missing:

Perhaps most valuable will be assistance from members of the public who notice that a toddler-age girl is suddenly and without explanation missing from their community. Anyone aware of such a missing child may call the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817 or Winthrop Police at 617-539-5806.

The Coast Guard, meanwhile, is analyzing the "drift pattern" of the waters around the peninsula to see if that might provide any clues where the bag came from, the DA's office reports.

What a horrible discovery.

I have a vague recollection that a child was believed to have been swept off of a beach somewhere on the North Shore a couple of years ago (Rockport?).

If my recollection is correct, and this discovery was connected to that, it would be a horrible indication that something much more sinister had happened.

I hope that is not the case.

Horrible, horrible, horrible.

UPDATE: Oh, crap. Same age group, and female. I hate that I even remembered this:

I hope her family can finally find what small peace is available in having closure. What a tragedy, either way.

This is indeed awful, but I have trouble imagining that the body of a child swept to sea three years ago would return to shore as anything approaching a complete set of remains. Or are you imagining she might have been murdered soon ofter her disappearance and just left there? Again, it seems unlikely, especially since all the investigations at the time concluded that the girl was swept out to sea.

A bag would imply intentional disposal. That would tend to mean foul play, would it not? Unless it was a case of a panicked, grieving parent doing something sort of understandable but non-standard.

Seems like they don't know most abductions aren't done by strangers.

I can tell you nobody saw a vehicle that didn’t belong in the neighborhood,” he said. “Nobody saw a vehicle leave that they didn’t know.

No one actually saw her get swept out. It's entirely possible that their conclusions are wrong.

You're correct, although if this poor girl was in a bag, then that might lead one to believe that she wasn't merely "swept away" but also murdered.

... and the person responsible panicked.

Manslaughter or murder, but she wasn't merely "swept out to sea."

It was quite some time ago, but I don't believe she was ever found and fits some of the same description. She was also taken in the night from her bed which could fit the pajamas mentioned.

Ayla was never found though the police think shes gone. I am in Waterville tonight and a lot of people are wondering the same. Whomever this baby girl is somebody is missing her tonight and she deserved more. I hope that she gets justice.
