Darwin Wilson Adilas felt he owed it to his mother to get his education. The 21-year-old had struggled with anxiety and dropped out of Randolph High School, but he enrolled in a program called Gateway to College, and finally, this fall, was preparing to start classes at Massasoit Community College, family members said.

He loved basketball, and spent his free time hanging out with friends, she said. He told corny jokes to get his sisters to smile, she said.
In essays he wrote on a personal website, Adilas said the Gateway program helped him get on track, and realize what he wanted to do in life. The panic attacks that struck in high school became manageable, he wrote, and he learned to focus on his school work.

His sister said he had recently settled on nursing. He planned to spend two years at Massasoit and transfer to Salem State, she said.
Melissa Adilas said Thursday that her family still did not know any details of her brother’s death. She said he lived with her, her sister, and their mother in Randolph.
“We’re coping, but it’s a hard time for us right now,” she said.
She wanted her brother to be remembered as a person who found the good in everything, she said.
“He just wanted the best for people,” said Melissa Adilas. “He never wanted to see anybody sad. He wanted everybody to be happy. And laugh.
