Sorry, kids: School's open tomorrow - and on Evacuation and Bunker Hill Day

Mayor Walsh was the bearer of the bad news - which also includes school going right through June 30. He said school officials are still figuring out what to do if we get more snow days.

Walsh said the T has assured him T buses will be running and that trains will be running on at least a limited schedule.

Walsh made the school announcement after meeting with the heads of 10 school unions.

The Bruins game tonight is on, but fans are being urged to park at the South Boston convention center, where there will be a free shuttle to the garden. People who park on the street near the Garden risk a ticket, he said - and that's because the ban on parking on major thoroughfares stays in place until 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Walsh said BPD has provided 300 rides today to residents who work at local hospitals who normally take the T to work.

Personally, I'd give up April vacation to get out a week earlier in June. I remember one snowy winter 82-83 (I think) we went to school right up to the 30th and the summer seemed so short.

School trips are often scheduled then, as is unrefundable family vacation travel. I'm planning on taking my high school junior on a college visit road trip - can't do that in the summer, because colleges are not in session.

Mostly the "people have unchangeable plans made months in advance" problem, really.

If Boston gets more snow days, but school can't legally go past June 30th, then maybe they should consider shortening April vacation and going to school on Bunker Hill & Evacuation Day. A majority of BPS schools do have heat but they do not have AC.

And BPS really needs to motivate their school leadership & parent councils to start earlier in August like other schools in Mass. In my opinion, having BPS students start after Labor Day is the biggest issue here.

In the late 90's we had so many school days that we had to go to school on a Saturday. Well to be honest... I never went in, my mom thought it was crazy to send kids to school on a Saturday, don't know how parents would feel about it today

"Evacuation Day" and "Bunker Hill Day" aren't the most legitimate of holidays.

Only the beginning of the creation of the United states. Say what you will about back holidays, but they have meaning and should be remembered. However, in these instances they are great days to have as buffer against too many snow days

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that St. Patrick's Day falls on Evacuation Day.

Plus, we already have Patriot's Day statewide.

According to Wikipedia:

While Saint Patrick's Day parades have been held in Boston since 1876, Evacuation Day was not declared a holiday in the city until 1901, amid interest in local history that also resulted in the construction of the Dorchester Heights Monument. The state made it a holiday in Suffolk County in 1938.The large Irish population of Boston at that time played a role in the establishment of the holiday. A 1941 law establishing the holiday in Suffolk County was signed in both black and green ink.

Patriot's Day commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775.

Bunker Hill Day commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 (the colonists lost.)

Evacuation Day commemorates the evacuation of British troops from Boston in 1776. New York used to celebrate their Evacuation Day until Thanksgiving (at the same time) took away its thunder.

Are you going to gripe about celebrating Memorial and Veterans' Days, too?

....Columbus Day. That disease spreading, genocide starting goon doesn't deserve a holiday.

Presidents Day is probably next.

One more day is needed, desperately! Have you noticed the uncountable unshoveled sidewalks, burried cars, speeding, incosiderate drivers! Stop bowing to silly pressure and think of the children first, pedestrians and the countless other of us who have to suffer from so much inconsideration, laziness, scumbaggery etc.

Walsh said the T has assured him

Uh oh. Are we going to have more dueling press conferences tomorrow?

Once or twice, at any rate, but their subalterns have been in constant communication, he said (well, OK, that's not the exact word he used, but he should have).

I Don't feel comfortable sending a 6 and 7 year old to the bus stop when there are 15 foot snow piles on every corner and piss poor plowed streets. They won't be going tomorrow.
Last Friday it took 85 minutes for them to get to school and 90 minutes to get home (it usually takes 25 to 30) I can only imagine what tomorrows commute will be like.

Not only is it ridiculous for the kids for the reasons you've pointed out, but it seriously messes up the morning commute for others on the road, too. Two days in a row last week I got stuck in gridlock on my way to work due to stuck school buses on streets that were still too narrow to accommodate them or allow them to turn with sufficient room to not get stuck in a snow bank. Another day to clear out snow before starting school back up is in EVERYONE'S best interest.
