When you could take a mini-train to the train at Wellington

Otis Horizontal Elevator

A video of the old "horizontal elevator" that used to run at Wellington until the developer of the apartment/retail complex near the station finally gave up on paying to constantly repair the thing.

Via Boston Reddit, which has more on the people mover's history.

With no air conditioning or proper ventilation, it was like a parked car sitting in direct sunlight. When filled with passengers it could become nearly unbearable. If it ever were to break down midway across, I'm sure it wouldn't have taken long before people started passing out from heat stroke.

Other than that, it was fun to ride!

This was privately owned by the Station Landing developer.

I looked forward to the 'elevator' when visiting family.

I always it was gonna breakdown halfway over the yard.

I want one.

I thought that it was for the parking garage and pre-dated the development of that complex. Before the apartments and Starbucks came, there were just a few mangy stores like a Strawberries and a renter of classic cars.

It was there years ago, then replaced with a far more efficient covered walkway when Station Landing was built.

The parking garage was built first by the developer before there was anything else. Although there are MBTA commuter spaces in the garage, the MBTA did not build the garage or the people mover.
