Burglars targeting homes in Oak Square

Boston Police District D-14 reports 27 break-ins in the Oak Square section of Brighton since mid-December.

The thieves are looking for unlocked doors and windows, but are willing to force in doors in their search for jewelry, cash, laptops, TVs and other electronics. They seem to be striking mostly between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Rick, who lives in the area, reports his hackles were raised this afternoon, when a guy seemed to be casing apartments on his block - and that when he asked the guy what he was doing, he summoned a crew of other guys in a white Explorer.

I live a mile or so from Oak Square. Two Friday nights ago, somebody woke me up and scared me half to death alternately beating on the front door and leaning on the doorbell (I'm on the second floor) at midnight. I declined to go see who it was. I hope it wasn't these guys.

It may seem like common courtesy to let in a person stuck in a foyer or buzzing someone in when your box well, buzzes, but it's a tried and true method of getting in for these clowns. They then go door to door, knock and if no ones home, they lean in hard against the door and use a prybar.

This was happening a fair amount around the Linden St area a few years back I recall and it actually happened to our neighbor in Packards Corner just a month or so ago.

Lastly, if you are robbed be sure to check out craigslist and this new app 'Letgo'.... half the stuff on their seems pretty shady. Stay alert people!

There was a Facebook photo of a guy allegedly linked to this story and the supposed white SUV involved. Seems after that went viral around town he was pulled over in front of the Green Briar in the SUV mentioned. Arrested at scene around 5:30/6:00 pm. Hopefully he sings like a canary and the rest of this crew goes down in flames. Good job BPD and everyone getting the info around the inter webs!

A few years ago I lived across from the Papa Johns and dry cleaners on Washington St.. The lady across the hall from me (on the 4th floor) had her apartment broken into so we set up a kind of...make-shift security system with an old cell phone with a motion sensor camera app pointed at the door. This was one of those apartments though that had the never used emergency doors in it and someone tried to come through it once, however I had a shelving unit in front of it - broke one of my favorite drinking glasses though...

I've seen my neighbors do this and I'm not sure why. Leaving the key for roommate that doesn't have one?

I live in Brighton, not far from Oak Square. Earlier this week I answered the door for a man wearing a similar jacket, lanyard and binder. He said he was doing quality assurance for Eversource, and wanted to verify my electricity usage on my bill. I told him that I didn't want to give him that information, and he left. Now I'm worried I might have talked to a scammer that was trying to case my house. Are they saying that was involved in the scam and break-ins?
