JP commuter seeks to simplify

Unicyclist in Jamaica Plain

Patty Neal spotted a commuter with just one wheel on Lamartine Street by the Stony Brook T stop in Jamaica Plain this morning.

While I normally ride a bicycle to work most days, one day a year I ride my unicycle in, just to prove that I can. It's a hell of a lot more work and takes me twice as long since you never get to coast.

Glad to see there are others beside me.

You could get one of those freewheel/fixed wheel set ups where you just flip the wheel according to what you want to do.

But then you'd need a brake for the freewheel side.

nice idea but unicycles use a direct drive system no gears, therefore no flip flop hubs.

A friend of mine has a two geared setup. You kick the hub from one side to the other to change. There's the regular one to one, and a higher gear.

Internal-geared hub and a v-brake!

I think it may be because unicycles can go on the MBTA at any time and are reasonable for "last mile" commutes. There's a guy on the Lowell Line who has been doing this for years.

I saw a distance unicycle on the Minuteman the other day - it looked like a high wheeler (pennyfarthing) without the second wheel, and had stuff mounted on it for distance adventures.

I have a friend who tried to take a 24" wheel unicycle on the green line. The asshole driver wouldn't let her board and said only "folding" bikes were allowed.

She took the next train without issue.

Being able to ride a unicycle is my bucket list.

But, is it actually better/faster than just walking? Just curious.

My office is 5.5 miles from home and it takes me an hour to unicycle in. So unless your walking pace is above 5.5 miles an hour, yes it's faster.

i seriously love that theres someone out there who unicycles nearly 6 miles once a year just to prove a point.

There's always someone who takes these things to a higher level than I would ever consider.

A unicycle is fun and attention-getting, but I think a Razor-type scooter or rollerblades would be more practical for "faster than walking".

theres a scooter bandit that runs around boston wearing a monocle and cape actually, and he is evil.

Great core workout I assume.

Never change, JP

I'd rather see someone bicycling/unicycling vs. being moved around via an electric scooter(mobile person). Those hoverboards promote nothing!

A neighbor just sent this link to me; it's so funny to see, as I had no idea I was photographed. I had just gone grocery shopping, so that bag was very heavy! If you are interested in unicycling, you should give it a try-- anyone can master it, it just takes practice! And it's a blast!
This made my day!
