The Sister who is facing the camera on the right is Sandra Musique... a friend of mine :-)

I was in Seattle on business on the night prior to their pride parade. The Sisters piled out of my hotel and into a titty pink fin-bearing caddy convertable and went cruising around Seattle, waving and tossing handfuls of candy.

Damn they are fun!

I believe.. and don't quote me on this but the Sisters started as a west coast thing. It's actually a org that does this, so the sisters you see in Boston aren't (or aren't usually) the same ones you'd see in San Francisco. But they are a part of the same order (so to speak). I remember seeing them in SF well over 15 years ago before they ever came here.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a worldwide order now. They are all connected and do the same/similar work in their communities. There are about 40 Houses across the US and Canada as well as nearly 20 Houses worldwide.

While they did start in San Francisco in 1979, each House is considered part of the same group. They are all Sisters :-)

As for "They're not the same Sisters you'd see in San Fran," Sisters Eunice X and KrisTall Mighty (who are both Boston Sisters, not pictured here) are actually from San Francisco and became Sisters there before moving to Boston. So you -might- see Sisters from San Fran in Boston ;-)

I remember seeing the Sisters in the Castro, on roller skates, wearing real nun habits and looking like real nuns. It was just a surreal sight. Totally unexpected. None of the crazy makeup and outfits they wear now.

Now they just look like extras from a pantomime.

>"GAY SHAME is a Virus in the System. We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality. We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power. We seek nothing less than a new queer activism that foregrounds race, class, gender and sexuality, to counter the self-serving “values” of gay consumerism and the increasingly hypocritical left. We are dedicated to fighting the rabid assimilationist monster with a devastating mobilization of queer brilliance.
