isnt there some survival type kids book where some teenager lives in the woods and has a raptor buddy

The book is My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George (a wonderful author) and has a couple of sequels. I have very happy memories of reading it to my son - we both loved it.

Marsh hawks are not that uncommon around Boston. They're low-fliers and prey on squirrels, pigeons, rats, etc. They're kinda awesome. The Fens is a great place to look for them.
