WCVB's online redesign is really a treat - a salty, sticky, orange treat

New WCVB page

WCVB recently redesigned its Web site to feature giant graphics and type large enough to be read from outer space. Every story now gets a ginormous photo, which is especially helpful for people who have just arrived from, oh, Alpha Centauri say, and have no idea what a plate of Cheetos might look like.

Perhaps they're angling for the WHDH 'Breaking News' crowd, once they lose their NBC news affiliation?

WCVB is ABC.

Expect ads for the Jitterbug cell phone, walk-in bath tubs, stair elevators, vigagra, and AARP membership.

"Here's how you can cheat the nursing homes out of their fees by paying our law firm huge fees instead" ads. Unless Herb Tarlek Gary LaPierre at WBZ Radio has an exclusive contract to air those.

Boston.gov has been unusable since it went "mobile friendly"

In fairness, they might have to do this because the pop-ads nearly obliterate everything on the page. That bit of the Cheetos photo poking out at the bottom gives me enough of a taste to keep going!

Personally, I like the new website. Now get the hell off my lawn!

The old one spoke news stories. This one exudes flashy tv. It wasn't necessary. I have had to get off it each time because ads won't quit. I may not use it any more.

I like it! It's like product placement in the news. For example, "Driver loses control of car, crushes three people, and crashes into a pole, where the car burst into flames. . . by the way, it was a Toyota Camry, and here is a picture, captured in flattering lighting, of a bright, shiny, new one which was not involved in the incident, and which you can purchase starting at $23k"

like all dinosaur mainstream media, hence the humongous type and graphics.

Big is in. Have you looked at Medium or Thought Catalog (which I can't believe is still around, but whatevs) these days? It's probably a byproduct of that whole mobile-first thing, which gives us desktop--stupid sites like boston.gov.

I'm 64 and guessing I'm older than you Adam. I used to prefer channel 5 because it focused more on the news and less on the graphics and the pretty boy/pretty girl broadcasters. But it has become the same as its competitors, especially with the addition of Maria Fox 25 Stephanos.

The website has always sucked, and sucks even more now. Even boston.com is better than wcvb.com

Don't like it. It's not very appealing. Especially when you try to click on a topic and it constantly bounces on the side.
