I don't know where people get this ridiculous notion that wild birds need to be fed. They are more than capable of taking care of themselves. Even the Bible addresses it in it's way with "God provides for the birds of the air". People leaving out food for birds in urban environments are invariably attracting rodents and other undesirable animals and vermin. Except for the bat sht crazy types, most of the people feeding birds are well meaning and do not realize they probably shouldn't be doing it.
I've never met anyone who spreads food for pigeons and other wild animals in a city who isn't suffering from some sort of clear mental deficiency. (Except in bird feeders, etc.)
It's hard to convince these people to stop as they don't understand the problem or honestly think they are needed by the animals.
This is usually the case. It is like talking to a hoarder - the behavior isn't rational and cannot be negotiated by any rational information. They don't understand why it is a problem, and don't understand how they may actually be hurting the animals that they are feeding. At least not those I have asked about their feeding and tried to dissuade from doing more.
No idea if there is an answer to this other than better mental health outreach for elders.

And birds eat many insects, as well as poop on double-parked cars. And your car too.
Kitty cats just kill, they don't eat their victims much of the time especially if they have a home with a human can opener.
Keep cats inside, and feed birds from feeders, it reduces waste and saves seed for feathered friends instead of fabulous furry freaks.
Yeah, okay. My cat was so "perfectly happy" that he diligently spent a couple of weeks working on the problem until he figured out how to open the casement windows in the basement. This meant escaping at night when he was most at risk, and leaving a path for wildlife to enter. He also figured out how to push up an already cracked open window and blow through the screen, and how to open the sliding door - even after we put a broomstick in it!
We decided to let him out in the daylight, called a truce, and he stopped vandalizing our window screens to escape. At least until the cat sitter found him on her doorstep down the street - he busted out of the basement because the sitter moved the box that was blocking access to the window latch.
Kind of reminds me of my not too crazy neighbor. She leaves birdfood out in two feeders and on the ground. She's had everything from sparrows to pidgeons to hawks to squirrels. Then the turkeys moved in, by the tens, and nested in the trees keeping her awake, or I should say, awakening her in the morning.
The feedings have stopped, nature has moved on to the next feeder.
Sorry TLF, we've found your weakness.
The people that hang out in your neighborhood are ten times more disgusting. North Station is nasty. I'd rather see birdseed on the sidewalk anyday over puke, piss, shit, and swill.
My only problem is that they throw the feed on the ground and leave. If you want to feed "wild" animals then have a seat! Enjoy the greasy poopy festival you've created.

Not only that
They're providing resources for critters to expand their population that will not always be there.
Once crazy bird lady moves, there's going to be a lot of little maladjusted critters starving to death that have gotten used to abundance.
Anecdotally
I've never met anyone who spreads food for pigeons and other wild animals in a city who isn't suffering from some sort of clear mental deficiency. (Except in bird feeders, etc.)

Blame it on Mary Poppins
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY
Crazy birdfeed lady
Birds are not children.
Cats are also not children.

Rats eat birds and bird eggs
No cats means lots of rats.
Snakes - snakes also kill and eat birds, and their eggs.
Rabbits are totally out of control now, too.
Humans harm birds far more - and bring rats and cats. Kill yourself if you love birds!
Indoor cats
also live a lot longer. They are perfectly happy indoors so just keep them in.
Perfectly happy?

I'd rather share Portal Park and the Greenway with...
... birds and other critters than the smokers.
Agreed .You never hear of anyone ,
Dying from second hand seed .
Seed your lawn , seed it ..

Woman doing as instructed. But we'd prefer kosher bagels as tribute in lieu of seed.

Don't forget .................
Needles and prostitutes.
Aptly put... couldn't have
Aptly put... couldn't have been said any better. The air and noise pollution at that location isn't coming from the critters, that's for sure.
False dichotomy.
False dichotomy.
Feeding the birds doesn't keep those other problem activities out of the neighborhood.
Never seen
A bird giving a John a " handy " in that area .
Talk about dichotomy. No pun intended.
Well, so much for sitting at that spot.
