Donald Trump not welcome in Roslindale restaurant

Charlie Redd, owner of Redd's in Rozzie on Washington Street, posts a call to arms against the gathering darkness:

The resistance begins now. Trump is an obvious danger to the rights I believe in and that this business is built around. Why fight? Because we are fucking Americans. That’s what we do, fight. Fight for values we hold dear. Just because I lie on the liberal view of the issues doesn’t mean I don’t have the will to fight. Just because we live in Massachusetts and are protected from the madness that will be unleashed on our other states does that give us a reason not to speak up and act? I will fight for the other states and in this state. I will fight for the ones that can’t. Right now that’s my daughters and all the girls growing up today in this confusing time where the end of male dominance in the Oval Office was ripped from their dreams and a whole other peril to their rights entered it. Olive and Viola cannot fight. But I can. Cecilia, who I tutor in the 2nd grade, cannot fight. Her family is laying low as their future as immigrant Americans lies in jeopardy. I can fight for them. I can stand up when they cannot.

Yep - and we vote for people who vote for president based on each Senator and each Congressperson gets a vote - that's the way the system works for a reason. It's not a Democracy with a direct election - been that way for almost 250 years. Worked pretty well so far.

I can see tweaking the system (proportional electoral votes) - but not destroying it .

You need to get out of that ivory tower you live in. In case you've been asleep the past 60 days - about half the country is really pissed with those kinds of ideas. It's why they voted for a crazy man over the alt-left - they considered it the lesser evil.

Except the Democrats have lost 12 governorships since Obama has taken office, a number of House and Senate seats, and state rep seats as well. Why is that? Hacking? Russians? FBI? Emails?

You cite the Nation? Wassamatta, Pravda in English wasn't left enough for you?

Voter Suppression. Thousands of reports, many in extremely main stream press.

The Nation has only been around since 1865 - the oldest continually published magazine in the United States. That really makes it very fringe, um, yeah. Compared to the New American, perhaps ...

Poor thing - the reality of fascism and racketeering at the local level in the shithole states is so difficult to understand for you, isn't it? Maybe you should move to one and see how wonderful they are for yourself?

Voter suppression like Black Panthers in 2008 patrolling a Philly poling station? You really think highly of people; that they're incapable of furnishing say a photo ID to vote, huh?

Pravda was firmly in the Trump camp.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37837432

You probably remember when Pravda was something secret commies hid in their attics.

Well, now Russia is no longer communist (did you sleep through that?), and its newspapers are right-wing and support a fascist dictator.

And also Trump.

You cannot recount the entire country. It simply cannot be done in a timely way. Thus we need the electoral college.

One way to modify things would be for each state to award electors proportionally. In Mass that would have meant that in 2016 Hillary would have gotten 7 electoral college votes and Trump 4. (Based on 60.8% for Hillary and 33.5% for Trump.) I don't know if this would have changed the national outcome, but it seems more fair than giving one candidate all the votes, even if they won the state by a hair.

How did that work for the Senate? The Senate was formed to represent the state governments instead of the state's citizens. But that's not the case anymore. So perhaps we are seeing a similar evolution of an institutional mechanism that no longer works as designed.

As for totalitarian lefties could you elaborate? What does that mean? Who are they? Or just trying to sneak in some hysteria hyperbole to add to the strife and chaos that folks like Rush Limbaugh and televangelists seem to enjoy promoting?

It is ironic that the fear about anarchists in the early 20th century as now turned into anarchists of the early 21st century. Except that they are called alt-right and Tea Partiers.

...have lost their minds in my opinion. I have two little girls myself which is why I don't use that type of language. The day after the election the protesters in front of the state building holding signs reading "F**k Trump" are as much to blame about the current state of deadlock as a President-elect that speaks about grabbing women by the p***y. Everyone has dug their heals in and made themselves believe that their view point is the only correct one and now we've lowered ourselves (on both sides) to slinging mud and curse words at one another. I hope that everyone with children can take a backseat to their egos and think about what we're showing our kids.

He will be the President. My feeling is that he did what he had to to get elected. Not unusual for any candidate. Hillary had a 'public' and a 'private' position.

Who knows? Maybe the new administration will be a pleasant surprise. All I'm saying is let's stop the rancor and see what happens.

The Democrats cannot change much anyway. Senator Harry Reid can be thanked for that one.

Who knows? Maybe the new administration will be a pleasant surprise. All I'm saying is let's stop the rancor and see what happens.

Vocabulary alert: "let's stop the rancor" here means that everyone who has a problem with anything that Trump or his team have done should simply shut up about it. It means that we should disregard their past actions and statements of their positions and intentions. It means that women should disregard the fact that Sessions, Price and Pompeo all voted against the Violence Against Women Act, and that he and every one of his cabinet picks opposes reproductive rights.. LGBT people should disregard Betsy DeVos's long history of donating to anti-LGBT organizations, Nikki Haley's support for North Carolina's anti-marriage-equality legislation and Session's co-sponsorship of Alabama's so-called "First Amendment Defense Act". Immigrants should ignore the People of Wal-Mart screaming "BUILD THE WALL", and the prison-industrial complex that stands to make a hefty profit from it. Muslims should ignore Mike Flynn's insane, fact-free rantings about the spread of Sharia law in the United States. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Maybe the new administration will be a pleasant surprise -- for you. But if someone is a member of any of the many groups whose rights have been explicitly* threatened by Trump and/or his cabinet picks...well, I'm sure you'd just love it if they'd sit down and shut up and stop insisting on their fundamental rights. But in your zeal to expand your vocabulary, you have clearly latched onto two words -- "rancor" and "vitriol" -- about whose meaning you clearly have not the first fucking bastard clue.

*To forestall another vocabulary crime, "explicitly" means "he/they said exactly what they intend to do and made no bones about it". You're welcome.

Most Americans will oppose the far-right agenda if it's explained to them. A majority of Americans support what the left ran on, each and every policy is popular in the U.S.

Many of the right wing policies are unpopular. if the "rancor" explains what policy the Trump admin is pushing a majority of Americans will oppose it. for example, Trump ran on leaving Medicare and Social Security alone. Ryan and Republicans have big plans to repeal the Medicare guarantee and cut Social Security benefits. If Trump endorses it he'll be endorsing what he ran against.

The GOP budget is unbalanced. It generates a trillion dollar deficit, a year! It would add 10 trillion to the national debt in 10 years. These are the same Republicans who spent much of Obama's presidency demanding spending cuts because the deficit and debt were too big and growing too fast.

Trump said he' bring back jobs. If his work with Carrier and Verizon is the extent of it, he'll fail at that too.

Actually, I did explain my fondness for 'vitriol'. It's one of my new favorite words. "Rancor", well...especially British, rancour. Rene Rancourt, Bruins National Anthem singer, if pronounced correctly in French, the 'T' is silent. So rancor is the guy that sings the National Anthem for the Bees.
I can keep this up all fucking bastard night, snowflake. See? I'm learning your ways. Attack the person. Hell, the election is over.
"Elections have consequences"
But, I do thank you for not capitalizing every fifth word out of sheer frustration with your inferiors.
In the mean time, try to keep a smile on your face. I know it makes you look goofy, but a frown is just so sad.

controlled by one political party, where a portion of such are batsh*t crazy, which gets very little play in the main stream media these days.

Charlie is a good dude who runs a fun restaurant that is packed nightly. He's a fiery and funny guy in person and clearly as a writer. Most of the people commenting here have never been there I assume. Check it out some time. Excellent bourbon selection.

Might go someday. I don't own a Trump hat, so politics is off the board. So is bourbon, but that's another matter entirely...

He is also good to his staff as well as his cliental. He can have his opinions and I thought in this day and age it was cool to "tell I like it is." I bet he won't back peddle and then blame someone for misconstruing his words.

Exactly. Adda way to stand up. We need to continue to not be pushed around. Just because someone barks the loudest, for some reason, Americans are attracted to the lowest common denominator which does just that. The fact he got so many votes is honestly a poor reflection on this country regarding basic common sense and intelligence. Smh

The majority of Americans did not vote for the lowest common denominator.

Now that Redd's is home base for "the resistance", it's crystal clear that political feelings or discussions that lean even slightly to the right will be unwelcome Where is a right-of-center Rozzie resident to go for a bite/drink?

Note to ownership. Many of the good folks in Rozzie who frequent your establishment might have voted for Trump. I am one of them. Do they agree with everything he spouts? Absolutely not. Do I think that my daughter is going to feel oppressed because Hillary lost? No, because trump isn't raising her, I am. And frankly, your parallels to WW2 resistance fighters is just so far off the mark. They put their LIVES on the line to stop a madman set on wiping them out. You are running a restaurant (in Rozzie), and nobody is going to shut you down or drag you away because of your rant. Seriously, relax.

And what does this resistance look like? Should I expect political lessons from my waitor with my drink order? For now, I'll probably continue to stop in (I really like the place), but I'll be sure to keep my mouth shut if I hear any political conversation. Wouldn't want to get assaulted (verbally or otherwise) by you, the staff, or patrons who must all agree with your stance.

Or maybe I'll even head over to BKs across the street. They do have an American flag proudly hanging outside - I'm sure that is still a "safe space" for free speech. At the very least, I can go there knowing that ownership isn't posting manifestos along with the dinner specials.

I hope you can find your safe space where there's no mean ol' libruls to make you feel bad and no one is allowed or call you the r-word or hurt your delicate conservative fee-fees in any way

Seriously? Judging by the owner's rant, I'm not the one with hurt feelings. Trump, for better or worse, was elected by the process set in place - and this guy's reaction is to rifle off a manifesto to potential customers? Dude I'm not the one with hurt feelings here.

And I'm sure you would have nothing to say if Hillary won, then a local restaurant owner posted a similar rant railing against her. You would probably be calling for an outright boycott.

I am a Republican, and there are a ton more in this area. It's people like you who evidently have a hard time dealing with that.

I'll still enjoy going to Redd's, but as a place that deals in hospitality and relies on patronage from all types of people, why try to alienate a large portion of them?

Good post though.

I am curious why did you vote for Trump? What was attractive about him?

I'm glad you have already started to ensure your daughters access to safe and accessible healthcare will be taken away. As well as helping her understand that it is ok for men denigrate women whenever they feel like it. And that she should never speak about her being assaulted b/c nothing will be done about it anyway. In fact it will be rewarded so her body isn't hers and her voice shouldn't be heard.

I hope none of these things happen to your daughter or other women in your life but unfortunately the numbers don't lie.

I never heard of Redd's until this post but is he really closed on Sundays due to staffing shortages? That was mentioned on the Phillip's Old Colony House post. Eataly just hired 600 people a few miles away. What's Redd paying them? Sunday seems an odd day to close a restaurant, given that most people who work restaurants as a second job are off from their "real job" on Sundays, as are the clientele who might be looking to eat out. If the angry, anti-Trump post is any indication, I'm not surprised that workers are scarce.

The cynic in me seems to think the rant might just be a business ploy. It could fly in JP.
I wonder if he supports the $15/hr concept?
Someone over at that post posted a thing about a restaurant 'bubble' where they are going down left and right.

https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/american-restaurant-industry-bubble...

EDIT: I'm told they are closed on Monday, not Sunday, but Vaugn's post said they are 'no longer open on Sundays'. So, if they are closed on Sunday, that's something new, apparently.

Goodness - do you just like to flame or what?

Redd's is open for brunch on Sundays (with a line usually) and closed for supper on Sundays due to lack of staff. They closed Sunday nights b/c he and his staff were putting in 15+ hour days and the owner thought they should have some time with their families on the weekend. Once staffing is set Sunday suppers will continue. If you haven't noticed many restaurants are having difficulties finding staff. Cuz you know...US citizens really want those jobs that immigrants have taken away.

Seriously just read...that info about staff is out there.
