Roslindale to lose its only office-supply store
By adamg on Tue, 04/18/2017 - 2:57pm
Stacy Eblan reports on the Quirky Roslindale Message Board that the Staples on Washington Street is closing on June 11.
The store opened in 2008 in a new building where the Ashmont Home Center used to be. Between Ashmont and Staples came several proposals that never got anywhere, including a chain drug store - stopped by Tom Menino himself to protect the nearby Sullivan's Pharmacy - and a self-storage place.

This sucks, but...
...whenever I've been in Staples, there have been more people working there than shopping there. Honestly, I'm surprised it has stayed open this long.
I wonder what kind of retail outlet could possibly move into a location this large? Maybe the New England Book Fair, which has been looking around for a place to downsize into?
I can't wait for the arguments to start about what's "not appropriate" for Roslindale, like a Petco or a CVS.
Can it be subdivided
so that part of it goes to CVS and the other part to a reduced New England Mobile Book Fair?
There's a CVS right at the top of the hill FFS
Can we maybe attract a business/businesses that are actually committed to the neighborhood, and won't ditch and run after a couple low quarterly earnings reports?
I'm not really interested in seeing more slack-ass corporate carpetbaggers jacking up biz lease prices and siphoning $$ out of the area.
Maybe even something with space for biz *and* residential? (Although that would mean a complete teardown of a LEED cert'ed bldg. A shame).
kthxbai.
Irony alert
I like the juxtaposition of 'LEED certified building' which was built by Staples with 'slack ass corporate carpetbaggers' also meaning Staples.
Such an outrage that a corporation came to your neighborhood, did a LEED renovation of a long empty space and employed some locals. Shame on them for trying to server our, sorry your, community.
What we really need
... is [insert pipe dream based on an assumption that Roslindale is Greenwich Village in the 90s/Trader Joe's/etc...] and definitely not [any kind of retail entity which could support this size building]
Prediction - this building is going to stay empty a long, long time until it gets knocked down and turned into a housing block which is actually what Roslindale needs.
I loved the convenience of this giant evil store when I needed to buy school supplies, printer ink at a random time, SodaStream refills. Oh well. As Mark says, this has been obviously coming for a long, long time.

That describes any Staples, Home Despot, etc., etc. I've ever been in.

I always have a heck of a time finding help in Home Depot. When I eventually find an employee many aisles away from where I want to be, they're usually very helpful, but they're few and far between and usually busy helping several other customers.
Are any other Staples stores closing locally?
or is this the only one? Last month a story went around that Staples plans to close 70 stores nationwide, but I haven't seen a list.
Too bad
I guess we will have to go downtown to buy office supplies now.
Why?
When you can just order them in your underwear at 3 am and have them delivered by sunrise?
Two things killing Staples -Amazon and their own online sales. I always loved stationery stores. Colorful, organized, lots of variety. Unfortunately making money with that model is almost impossible when customers like me come in looking for green, glossy folders and they only have blue or green matte. This is a natural online biz. Have heard that this channel is actually showing healthy griwth for Staples. Unfortunately, it's cannibalizing their traditional sales channels. :-(
Or you could go 4 miles to
Or you could go 4 miles to the Staples in Dedham on Route 1 (450 Providence Hwy)
For the few copy/print functions I needed...
That store was super helpful... :(
Seems like box retailers are on their way out though. I wonder if a (even) smaller scale store/footprint would have helped.
I must also agree with a number of comments regarding the employees/customer ratio. The staffing situation never seemed to make much sense...
SUPER DUNKIN!
HA!
They could test their new concept (that I just invented).
Super Dunkin and turn the current location into a Dunkin Express.
Seriously though...
The few times I went to that Staples, it was empty, but the service was great.
Too bad
Service has really always been great at this Staples, so good that I always remarked on it every time I went. I can pretty much say that without exaggeration. And it was surprisingly nice to have a Staples in the area, though recently the corporate stinginess was showing. But the people there have always been great. This seems so unfair to them.
