The Boston Consulting Group could use some consulting on Boston neighborhoods
By adamg on Mon, 07/16/2018 - 3:40pm
Last month, the Boston Consulting Group, which promises to "bring the right people together to challenge established thinking and drive transformation," issued a report on lessons from Boston on "reshaping urban mobility with autonomous vehicles."
It's no doubt full of deep insights into robocars, but we just can't get past this map of adoption rates by neighborhood, or something - brought to our attention by Mark Bennett. Just how many problems with it can you find?

Wow, I did not know that I
Wow, I did not know that I lived in West Boston and my uncle in Revere really lives in East Boston.
oh my word
"West Boston?" Roxbury & JP switching places with West Rox & Rozzie? Dorchester reduced to...something, I can't tell.
How hard would it have been to check this against the official city/ward map that I pulled from the Boston.gov site in less than 3 minutes?
https://www.cityofboston.gov/maps/pdfs/ward_and_precincts.pdf
And East Boston
Somehow they got Revere labeled as East Boston, more or less ignoring East Boston.
Whoh
All this when there are freely available maps through the City of Boston and MassGIS.
If the idea was to create "traffic sheds" around coronary arterial road systems that drain and replenish cars to an area, they failed at that, too.
It almost looks as if they can't tell the difference between the Mystic, Charles, and Neponset Rivers, and shifted things as if the Mystic is the Charles.
Somebody tell them
they forgot to label North Boston
So far, so good
It's challenging my established thinking.
Three Year Study
It took them three years to come up with something this inaccurate.
They are impressive.
Maybe they're transplants from South Virginia...
I particularly like
Downtown being in the middle of the harbor. I guess all the stuff we think of as Beacon Hill, the North End, Back Bay, South End, Fenway/Kenmore, etc. are now "West Boston"
Downtown's for the amphibious vehicles
And autonomous submarines.
Are you sure
this map wasn't prepared by McKinsey? https://www.universalhub.com/2016/consultant-recommends-bps-shut-and-sel...
I see one problem with the map
Mattapan has historically been a part of Dorchester, but in this map they lumped it in with parts of the old towns of Hyde Park and West Roxbury (minus Jamaica Plain.)
That's the issue, right?
Hey, Boston Consulting Group
I'll do the job of whomever allowed this map to be released to the public with your brand attached to it for $45,000 a year. I get three weeks vacation owing to my 19 years in the workforce, but you don't have to pay me for them, and I don't demand health insurance either. Just the 45K will do.
I can form an opinion on anything, and I'm great at sharing ideas, since that's what "consulting" would appear to be to me on the surface.
I understand that most jobs are acquired because of who you know, so, get to know me. I drink. I'll drink with you. Am I hired?
Don't call us, we'll call you
Don't call us, we'll call you
No gun to my head

They're Not Boston Neighborhoods — They're "Neighbourhoods"
Lol ... our is that Loul?
I guess that ten days in Canada rewired my mind not to see that, eh?
When New-comers and Transplants Decide They Know Best for Boston
Did Shirley Leung have something to do with this?
And, we can't wait for autonomous vehicles to start automatically driving to West Boston....
Why, it might just be the trip of a lifetime,
to California!
Maybe even to L.A.!
Another one!
I never knew that Deer Island was downtown. I guess it makes sense, they both have skyscrapers.
Henpecking
Did they do this on purpose to get the provincial rubes in an uproar to make noise about their autonomous vehicle preparations ?
Wrong neighborhoods
41 is 44 and 44 is 41
There was once a "West Boston Bridge"
It was replaced by the Longfellow Bridge. Of course it was nowhere near the area labelled "West Boston" on this map.
I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt
I figured maybe they were creating new general areas (e.g. "West Boston") sort of like "Metro West", which is not a real city, but a general area. However when you label Revere as East Boston or West Roxbury as JP it becomes clear that they just haven't a clue.
The numbers are wrong too
They should all be zero, because the technology isn't going to work.
