This is just one example of why many people call the
organizers of this bloated outdated dinosaur of an event the Boston Arrogance Association. Heck, even the Red Sox cancelled their game today.
And every key tradition associated with the Marathon has been destroyed, eliminated, or minimized since the race became a commercial event in the early 1980s.
Thousands of eager
Thousands of eager participants flew in from around the world, tens of thousands of volunteers and security people mobilized, dozens of miles of heavy traffic lanes blocked etc. Not as easy to postpone as a Red Sox game.

In the days of "amateur" athletes, it was nothing but rich kids and people from fascist governments doling out steroids who got to be elite. Women were pushed out entirely.

Why postpone it? People run
Why postpone it? People run in worse weather all the time. If an experienced runner underdressed for today's weather, then that's their own mistake, unless they're from someplace like Hawaii and have never run in cold rain before.
It is pretty neat to have the slowest winning marathon times in 40 or 50 years.

Said runners bring in $100m+ to the local economy
The logistics for the race are planned years in advance (you can't just have a double-header with another marathon a few weeks later)
There are always injuries, heat, cold and otherwise
Oh, and there were still hundreds of thousands of spectators out there cheering their faces off. I guess you're soft.
No, because runners are not wusses
The winner ran a marathon in single digit temps in January, and most of the runners trained in lower temps. The rain messed with people, but good planning by the runners could have kept things from getting too bad. Better cold than hot, I say.
I used to work Marathon
I used to work Marathon medical. I think it was 2015 that was another cold, rainy year (but not as bad as today), and we were drowning in hypothermia cases throughout the day.

2007 was pretty bad, too. I believe they cancelled the reenactments in Lexington.

They still had the battle reenactment early this morning, but cancelled the parades, Paul Revere's and William Dawes's rides, and the rest of today's outdoor events.
Runners
They should try wearing a poncho with a fleece jacket underneath, that would keep them warm and dry

I ran a half
in conditions about as worse as yesterday. The problem is not so much when you are running (in regards to being cold) but afterwards when you finish the race.
