The Ghost of Christmas Future visits Fort Point Channel

Flooding along Fort Point Channel

Justin Teman took a walk along Fort Point Channel this morning, at least, the part that wasn't flooded.

In October, the city released a plan to protect South Boston from an anticipated 3 1/2-food rise in Boston Harbor levels by 2070 that would include raising the Harborwalk along the channel and creating new berms to hold back some of the water and new, terraced fields that could absorb flood waters - and could double as parkland on drier days.

Indeed!!

If you had set-up a tide gauge at say Summer Street Bridge when those bridges were brand new [circa 100 years ago] -- you couldn't have noticed the difference from this years Christmas High Tide in any meaningful way

There is enough complexity in the system [Earth Moon, Sun] to make each "Astronomical High Tide" every month different --- any trend over a human lifetime is lost in the "measurement noise"

Throw in variations in the atmosphere due to the weather -- such as local wind and local barometric pressure -- "Fagettaboutit"!!

All you need to know for practical purposes is that the difference is low and high tide daily in Boston is approximately 10 feet *1

The rest is pure and simple "JUNK Science" of the Worst Kind

*1 The variation on the theme is about another foot --- with a bit more or less depending on the phase of the moon, distance of the moon from the earth, distance of the earth from the sun, etc.

*2 Note that over 70 years a tide record in the inner harbor is more variable due to recent river flows as well as semi permanent changes in the bottom due to filling and dredging activities associated with construction on the shore and with piers
