Hyde Park to get a coffeehouse again

Coffee Break Cafe, which currently has coffeehouses in Quincy and Milton, announced this week it's moving into the space vacated last year by Bean and Cream on Truman Parkway at Fairmount Avenue.

They're hoping to open by April, with hours starting at 5 a.m.

I look forward to a coffee joint. I frequented Bean & Cream — good coffees, snappy service, with smiles, great ice cream (Richardson's), and Despina's superb biccotti. She and sons even had an open mic for music and poetry.

Yeah, yeah, Truman Parkway is busy and there's only on-street parking, but there are many commuters, those of us who live on and near the hill, and most of all, a dearth of coffee shops. The small, soulless Dunkies a half mile away isn't inviting. There aren't even any Starbucks or such, just a couple of lunch places that certainly don't encourage lingering pretentious types with notebooks or laptops.

Here's hoping the new folk can draw in the commuters and locals. I'll do my part. Maybe now that the Switch Gallery is trying monthly open mics, we can foster a mini beatnik revival in this coffee wasteland.

I am very happy they are opening another coffee shop in that spot, I tried to be a regular at the late Bean and Cream. But although I loved the chats I had to go to work and needed my drink a bit faster. They need to keep that in mind next time. In the morning most people want their drink and get out to catch their train or whatever. Unless I had 20 extra minutes in the morning I would not stop there for coffee.

No mini-beatnik revival for you? Soul-less philistine!
