The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters responded to 230 Congress St. around 12:45 p.m. for an apparent chemical release that forced the evacuation of the building, sent three firefighters to the hospital for observation and turned downtown into a traffic nightmare.

BFD hazmat technicians found no detectable chemical readings in the upper floors of the 12-story building; the department reports it is now looking at what caused the building's fire-suppression system to activate.

The odor appeared to originate on the building's fifth floor.
