Yes, the fox that attacked three people in Burlington was rabid

A fox that went after three women in separate incidents yesterday was tested for rabies and found to be infected with the brain-destroying virus, Burlington Police report.

The fox managed to bit two of the women, who are now getting rabies shots. The other woman managed to fend off the crazed beast with a plastic baseball bat.

A Burlington officer dispatched the fox while investigating one of the attacks, police say:

The officer checked the woman's yard and soon spotted the fox. The animal began to approach the officer in an aggressive manner. The officer responded by discharging his weapon and subsequently killing the fox and ending the threat.

I didn't know rabies was common around here. What animals are the reservoir?

Bats, skunks and raccoons are the typical reservoir hosts for rabies in the US. In the northeast, particularly the urban, exurban and suburban 495 ring, I'd mostly eliminate bats.
