Insistent man gets what he wants from police in Jamaica Plain

Capt. John Greland reports:

Just had a man come into the front lobby of E13 and request to be arrested. The request was denied. The man then walked out of the lobby and went to the parking lot behind the station and vandalized a cruiser. He was then arrested.

Rocky and Bullwinkle where, after the sheriff locks Bullwinkle up to protect a suitcase full of stolen money he retrieved, Boris and his subordinates try to get arrested in order to steal the suitcase. Of course, his plan fails.

Someone gets arrested on purpose to get access to someone else already in holding by smashing up a cruiser.

Reminds me of the Three Stooges episode where they tried everything, including kicking a cop in the butt, to get arrested so they could go to jail to rescue an innocent man. Nothing worked. Finally they gave up and did something by accident which got them arrested.

It's still summer, Soapy would have waited until the air was a bit more crisp to pull this stunt.

With all these issues regarding mental health

I think in the future anyone that comes into the police station and say arrest me and appears a little adamant about it suggests an immediate evaluation and custody.

With only 8 comments this thread has relevant references to King of the Hill, The Three Stooges, Rocky and Bullwinkle, mine to an O Henry story and now yours to Catch-22. I guess real life and art really are hopelessly intertwined.

This happens occasionally. People do come into the station or walk up to an officer on the street asking to be arrested. Sometimes they will smash a window or commit some other crime in front of an officer, leaving little choice but to arrest. If the person is sober and hasn't committed any arrestable crime, the only real option is a "safekeeping" where the person can be sent to an emergency room to await a counselor who will most likely let them go with a pamphlet of hotline numbers. It's unclear if this was ever tried with this subject.

It will be interesting to see if this vandal is given the same courtesy coverup as the UMass Vietnam Memorial antisemitic vandal, already a wanted felon before the incident, who was allegedly sent to a Mental Health facility before arraignment (unheard of) and never mentioned since.
