Man charged with trying to end Cambridge argument by shooting his opponent; he missed

Cambridge Police report arresting a Somerville man for an incident at Cambridge and Columbia streets around 3:05 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police Say William Pires, 19, fired a gun at his opponent. Both then fled before police, brought to the scene by a ShotSpotter alert, arrived, police say, adding officers later recovered two shell casings at the scene.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that a verbal altercation between Pires and another identified man occurred prior to the shooting. After recovering evidence, utilizing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and receiving assistance from the Somerville Police Department and the Probation Department at Somerville District Court, the Cambridge Police were able to positively identify Pires as the suspect responsible for the shooting and he was placed under arrest this morning.

Pires was charged with assault with intent to murder, carrying a firearm without a license and dischargig a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, police say.
