Man robs bank in Arlington at knifepoint

Arlington Police report they are looking for a guy they say walked into the Winchester Savings Bank branch on Medford St. around 10:20 a.m. today and ran off with money after showing a teller a knife.
The suspect was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a Red Sox hat, and is described as a white male believed to be in his 20s, approximately 5'10" tall with an average build.
If he looks familiar, contact police at 781-643-1212.

I worked in retail banking for almost 20 years
and it astounds me that people are stupid (or desperate?) enough to rob a bank. The risk is high and tellers are trained and drilled to minimize the potential loss. If you're lucky, you'll (temporarily) get away with a couple grand, if that.
Oh, and you're automatically upping the ante by using (or even implying that you have) a weapon.

The tellers aren't paid to risk any kind of attack. Plenty of crimes have been committed just with a paper note (in fact, you might be better off with that, since then when you're caught you don't get weapons charges added on to your sentence).

The bank is insured and the losses are small. The bad PR and lawsuit should a customer or employee actually get hurt is far worse. Better to just hand over a few hundred in cash and let the police deal with the rest.
