Mary Ellen spotted a blue dasher at Millennium Park in West Roxbury the other day.

These little beasties are coming down from the Blue Hills.
I just call them dragonflies.

Aside from being cool bugs that can hover in mid-air, they eat lots of mosquitoes.

Please do not harm them, they are on our side.

I don't think a human could hit the damned things if s/he wanted to. Way too fast.

Bug spray? Long handled swatter? I know some people are freaked out by any insect, but please leave these alone.

Someone long ago - when I was young and callous - showed me how to catch a resting dragonfly. Like frogs, they have differential vision so if you slowly and patiently creep up on them they won't move.

I appreciate bugs with compound eyes. Nice shot.
