As has been previously reported, the key element for Brandeis' leadership is to close the public side of the art museum, because this would provide them with wider latitude to sell off the art:

Marty Krauss, Brandeis provost, also shed light on the reasoning behind the closure, which is scheduled for late summer. In an interview, she said university officials believed they could not operate a museum, which is expected to abide by a code of ethics limiting the reasons it can sell off art, and then sell art to pay for needs other than the museum. Closing the 48-year-old museum entirely would provide the university more freedom, Krauss said.

I think that Brandeis' president is using this terminology (closing it as a public art museum, but changing it to a more academic/educational mission) to accomplish the same thing: give the university maximum legal leeway to sell off whatever art they they can to make ends meet. How he can say that it will no longer be a public art museum, but that the "public will still be allowed to visit," is indicative of some highly-refined legal language the university is parsing to accomplish their goals.

I don't think he has changed the university's position at all. Instead, he is doing good PR spin -- which is not surprising, since the Globe reports that Brandeis has now hired "Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, a public relations firm specializing in crisis management."

The selling off of art at Brandeis is symbolic of what is wrong with America. Hopefully the economy starts to turn around and Brandeis can use this infamy and media attention to bring about a resurgence of interest in art in their environment.

Colleges used to fill their boards (and the board chair) with leaders, now it fills them with money people. Money people put money above the rest.

What is so offensive about this board-initiated liquidation of Rose, is that Rose is a self-sufficient organization that takes only heating from Brandeis.

It was built with private donations and its operates on its own revenues and contributions.

That said, the STUPIDEST thing about the proposed auction is that Brandeis would alienate its wealthiest donors by selling off the art they love and gave to the Rose because they love Brandeis.

Sell the art and then ask them for more money. ha ha ha. The guys is not only a turd, he's a moron.
