Roxbury driver charged with slamming into woman in Somerville, then driving off as she lay dying

State Police report charging Zewdu Abate Gedamu, 64, of Roxbury for the death of Cheryl Pauline Richards, 52, of Somerville, in a Mystic Avenue crosswalk yesterday evening.
Gedamu, ordered held in lieu of $1,000 bail, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury or death and a crosswalk violation, State Police say, adding he could face additional charges for the crash, in which he allegedly hit Richards with his 2008 Mercedes-Benz E350.
Gedamu turned himself in this morning.

The question
Did he not stop because he's stupid or because he was stupid and drunk?
Or terrified
Look, I'm not arguing that you don't charge (and convict) him with hit-and-run. And, objectively, hit-and-run should carry the same penalty as DUI, so there's less incentive to dash.
But it just might be that he made a dumb mistake after making a terrible error, and that happens sometimes.
He could've helped
He could have stopped and checked on her condition. I'm just saying any morally just person that has at least a little care for other people would at least stop and try to help, or even call an ambulance. Him leaving the scene showed he only cared more about himself rather than bothering about another person's life.
And even after all this he's pleading not guilty! He only turned himself in cause he found out there were some witnesses who saw his car so he wouldn't get a harder sentence. If no one saw I'm pretty sure he would haven moved on like nothing ever happened. Shame
About that not-guilty plea
Doesn't mean anything in terms of sentencing or, well, guilt. Not-guilty pleas are automatically entered for all defendants at their arraignments in Massachusetts. If they do want to plead guilty, they have to wait a bit.

The average juror
Here's the reason that hitting someone with a motor vehicle is the only way you can guarantee you'll get away with killing them. It only takes one juror to sink a prosecution and any jury will probably have multiple members like the guy above.
They identify with the perpetrator and will not convict him for a killing and fleeing the scene when they view these crimes as just "an error" or "a mistake".
