Toke of the town: Mary Ann's pot proposal goes before public on Monday

A company that wants to turn Mary Ann's in Cleveland Circle into a pot shop holds a "community outreach" meeting on Monday.

The session starts at 6 p.m. at the Elks Club, 326 Washington St. in Brighton Center.

Happy Valley Ventures of Massachusetts has proposed buying the venerable watering hole and turning it into its second marijuana establishment in Boston, where it would sell marijuana and pot-laced comestibles to both recreational and medical users. The company currently has a license for a medical-marijuana dispensary in East Boston.

Happy Valley needs to win a letter of "non opposition" from the City Council and approval from both state marijuana regulators and the Boston zoning board.

Of course. See the overview of the Brighton-Allston Improvement Association meeting (the link in the original post).

As if college students are in need for new ways to get high. If people want to get marijuana they will, legitimate business or not. Lets stop pearl clutching and move onto more pressing issues.

Whether they will be changing the name to Mary Jane's.

as someone who lived in cleveland circle for 8 years, i guarantee a pot shop would be a net positive over Mary Ann's.

I'm sure the NIMBYs of Brighton will respect the will of the voters here and green light this legal use.

They are so reasonable aren't they? I belong to a list serv for the A-B community and the self appointed leader lives near BC/Oak Sq but considers all projects in all neighborhoods her biz. She's savaged projects in Allston Village due to her concerns over parking - likes to shop in Allston apparently without having to walk much so don't improve. Not everyone was lucky enough to buy real estate in the area before 1995!

It might actually improve the football tailgating at BC, or lack thereof.

I'm one of the many BC alumni who can't afford the thousands in contributions required to get a space for tailgating. My parking space requires a bus ride from Needham or New Balance HQ. People with that kind of money aren't likely to toke up in public, IMHO.

Google Maps tells me that Mary Ann's is 1.5 miles from 326 Washington St, Brighton Center.

Why not have the meeting actually in Cleveland Circle?

This is where they always have the meetings

Not Mary Ann's, but a different bar or restaurant in that space would be better for Cleveland Circle. Not opposed to a pot shop, just think it would be better if they took over a retail storefront.
