Cambridge announces new coronavirus cases, suspends parking-meter enforcement

Cambridge yesterday announced four more residents have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the city's total to seven cases.

The city also announced that parking-meter "payments will not be required and will not be enforced until further notice." Also, resident and visitor parking permits that had been scheduled to expire on March 31 will continue to be good until City Hall can re-open.

The city also ordered all playgrounds shut.

Parks, fields, and courts, with the exception of playground areas, will remain open for passive use. No congregating, group activities or game playing is allowed. Please maintain a distance of 6 feet from other people while enjoying these spaces.

Cambridge probably had the same thought process as Brookline, which has suspended its infamous ban on overnight parking: It's a crisis, nobody's going to be flooding our streets, let's make it a bit easier on folks.

It's also possible that it's a consideration that if they kept meters in effect, they'd have to send someone around to clean them, again and again, daily. That's paying for an employee or contractor and a LOT of antiseptic spray or wipes that could be better used elsewhere.
