Chelsea, National Guard and Salvation Army begin daily food distribution sites

Food line in Chelsea Square

Lining up for food in Chelsea Square.

The city of Chelsea today began daily food distribution to residents who need help getting enough to eat, in the city that has been hit by Covid-19 harder than any other community in the state.

Former City Councilor Matt Frank watched the distribution in Chelsea Square, which began with National Guard members unloading food from their trucks before the 11 a.m. start.

The city says it will do food distributions at two points in the city between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each weekday, consisting of prepared meals and a week's worth of groceries. The locations will change each day, and will be posted on the Chelsea Housing Authority Web site. Friday's locations are the City Hall parking lot at 500 Broadway and the Mary C, Burke Parking Lot at 300 Crescent Ave.

Part of the funding for the program comes from the One Chelsea Fund, organized by the city and the United Way, which is accepting donations to help local residents meet Covid-19-related needs.
