Fire-belching locomotive on one train forces evacuation of another train at Back Bay

Boston firefighters responded to Back Bay station shortly before 10:15 p.m. on reports of smoke coming from the vicinity of a commuter-rail train on Track 7 - which was quickly evacuated.

A chat with MBTA workers revealed the problem was a fire in an exhaust stack of a locomotive on Track 4 - which the T pulled out of the station so that the engine could be shut to stop the fire. But you know how Back Bay station is with smoke even in the best of conditions.

We'd never want to use those wires above the tracks like Amtrak does. Less pollution and better performance? Those are dark arts.

and Track 5 is its counterpart. Tracks 1, 2, and 3 are Amtrak/commuter rail for the Northeast Corridor.

Is Track 4 the northbound Orange Line track?

No, it's unrelated to the Orange Line. It's the New Haven Railroad's track numbering scheme. Tracks 1 and 2 are the "main" tracks. The other tracks are next to that on the Track 1 side, so they get increasing odd numbers from there.
