Hardly a sweet ride by Phillips Candy House due to a couple of road shutdowns
By adamg on Sun, 10/25/2020 - 3:41pm
Chipsy 231 reports motorists seemed to be getting testy this afternoon as the line of traffic grew and slowed in front of the Phillips Candy House on Morrissey Boulevard. The state shut Freeport Street towards Morrissey and the Granite Avenue Bridge for repairs.

This made me remember the
This made me remember the best scene in Falling Down when Michael Douglas demands to know the reason for all the main road construction. And then what happens next. Classic.
Freeport Morrissey intersection is inhumane every day.
Expressway off ramp and Morrissey northbound traffic converging onto Freeport leave people sitting and waiting, and playing chicken when the lights change. There is no practical alternative route for vehicles heading towards Dot Ave at Glovers Corner. Build an overpass.
Are you sure you've driven
Are you sure you've driven that intersection any time in recent years?
I agree that it is not very smooth or fast - sometimes it takes two or three cycles to get through it if you're coming from the northbound expressway or if you're trying to turn left from Morrissey onto Freeport northbound.
However, the traffic lights are programmed that there are no opposing greens - each approach gets its own exclusive green. It probably has less playing chicken than any other intersection of similar size.
This is confusing
In that Freeport Ave and Granite Ave never meet.
Granite Avenue was closed
Granite Avenue was closed this weekend at or near the drawbridge.
So- northbound drivers on the Expressway that would normally take Granite Ave exit to get to a certain swath of Dorchester had to either (a) exit early (at East Milton Square) and use Adams Street to Lower Mills, or (b) go beyond Granite Ave to the next exit (Victory Rd, by the Gas tank) and use the nearby traffic light at Freeport & Morrrisey.
There's also ongoing work that has blocked Freeport in the opposite direction (from Victory down to Phillips) so there was no option to go down to the rotary opposite the bowling alley - all traffic using that exit ended up at that traffic light.
Oh
Now it makes a ton of sense. Thanks.
