Maybe Covid-19 testing sites should stock some Yankee Candles
A few days ago, Terri Nelson noted numerous negative reviews from "angry ladies" on the Yankee Candle Web site complaining that their newly acquired scented candles have no scent.
I wonder if they’re feeling a little hot and nothing has much taste for the last couple days too.
For example (scroll down a bit for the first negative review).
Now Kate Petrova, a research assistant at the Harvard Study of Adult Development (which studies a particular group of people over decades) reports she grabbed Amazon reviews of the top-five selling scented candles and found that complaints about a lack of them being scented rose this past spring, dipped in the summer and now have reached a new peak in October and November.
I couldn’t just walk past this Tweet, so here is some fun #dataviz

I'd buy cigar smoke scented candles for my poker game. That former olfactory ambience is gone along with the last cigar smoker in our group of friends.
The no scent reviews go back a while
In the linked review there are a number of reviews from more than a year ago that complain about no scent. I still like the data analysis as it clearly shows a trend.
If she really wants her bathroom to smell,
I might be able to help her with that. I'll bring the cat.
Ah, if only scented candles really weren’t.
If only they weren’t a health and safety hazard as well.
Nasty things!
Okay, fess up hubsters!
Raise your hand if you have been uncapping and sniffing your Yankee Candles as a periodic sanity check!
I made good use of one when my cat wounded a mouse who ran into my closet and under a bureau to die during our bathroom renovation project. Double barreled double vanilla for the win!
If you don't have any Yankee Candles ...
Just pop the lid on the handiest spice container you can find. Cinnamon works pretty well, or that little bottle of vanilla extract you probably have somewhere.

is usually the first thing I smell after waking up each morning. This works well for me as a test.
Febreeze - the COVID bellwether
I have a Febreeze stand up with the scent of Gain (detergent), and I sniff it just to make sure I have my sense of smell. It's pretty strong.
My sense of taste is also good - the Chinese mustard and Colman's Mustard confirmed it (both had a good burn and went to the back of my nose).
Green Test
Every time I open a new drammel from the dispensary, I take a deep whiff. If I can't smell it, either it's crap or I have covid. I can smell it usually in the other room.

While I was waiting for the results of my "definitely exposed yikes!" test, I took medicinal tastes of chocolate, so that I could be reassured and delighted.
They have a point... the scents have changed
Now that the company has changed hands a few times, I have to say the scents aren’t as strong or as good anymore. My new hotness is Kringle Candle, which is owned by the son of the man who started Yankee Candle.
True
Around 5 yrs ago I returned a few that had no scent. Ever since the original family sold the brand it's gone downhill. I don't purchase them anymore. Does Kringle Candle do any better?
Much better!
Some of the original Yankee Candle scents are now at Kringle. I highly recommend them. In fact, I am taking a trip out there (Bernardston) on Thursday since I have a dentist appointment out in Amherst. (please don’t judge, I kept my dentist from college…)
Colonial Candlecrafters, out
Colonial Candlecrafters, out of Central Penna, is a small, family-owned business that Have product far superior to Yankee. They ship around the country. I’ve used them for 25 years, even when the original owner retired and the new owner licensed all the original recipes. (Is recipe the right word for candle-making?) In any case, a solid company with a quality product. Orange spice is one of my favor scents for this time of year.

The Deep State thought of everything!
It is truly a testament to the skill and perseverance of our corrupt intelligence services that they thought to fake these reviews at the precise times and in the precise amounts to be consistent with the fake infection rate numbers.
Why, there must be all kinds of data sets one could think to gather that might contain data that should correlate with the pandemic - if the pandemic were a real thing that was actually happening. It's almost impossible to believe that the Deep State has managed to sprinkle so many different kinds of fake data around, on the off chance that anyone should think to look at it.
Well played, Deep State. You almost had me there.

That most recent negative review seems a bit suspect
Given they outright say, "If I wasn’t confined to my home because of covid I would return these for sure."
I'd say that particular review was someone's idea of a joke.
