Red Sox: Yes, we have racist fans

The Red Sox yesterday responded to news that Torii Hunter insisted his contracts had a clause to keep him from being traded to Boston because of the racists here with a simple statement:

This is real

.

Followed by a longer statement that, yes, a "small group of fans" are indeed racist shits, not just to visiting players but to minority Fenway workers, despite the best - and continuing - efforts of the team to root them out.

It's worth clicking through to the Red Sox tweet responding to this. They don't deny the problem. They say they work to stop it happening but that there's still more work to do. Sox management is not responsible for the existence of such fans, but they are responsible for not tolerating it at Fenway and it sounds like they take that responsibility seriously (hopefully in actions, not just words).

Where were the Red Sox two years ago when Adam Jones called out fans at Fenway Park??

I thought they banned the people they caught using racial slurs for life 2 years ago?

And when they did that, did you think those were the only loudmouth racists to attend games?

and it's worth scrolling down to see Hunter's reply: "Change starts now. Much love!"

I was at a game and two mouth-breathers dropped some racist shit about a couple of Indian-American guys sitting nearby. They just let it roll off of them, but I told the usher what they said and they got security and tossed them out immediately.

Torii Hunter chose Minneapolis because they don't have racists there?

Hunter is actually not the greatest messenger considering his very questionable past statements, but that doesn't mean he isn't speaking the truth about this.

I have no doubt there are racist fans in the stands at Fenway. What I don't understand is how other ballparks manage to keep racists out. I can't believe Fenway is the only park where this kind of thing happens.

You clearly have never been to a certain baseball stadium in the Bronx. Or visited the City of Brotherly Love.

racism is actually encouraged and part of the "Tradition".

Looking at you, Atlanta.

Fenway is obviously not the only place, but enough people have said it's the single worst place for long enough that mentioning other places really comes off as just a deflection.

I'd guess other places don't have different methods for keeping racists out, and that it's probably more that racists (or vocal racists, at least) are simply less likely to attend games in other places. Maybe we have more racists here, or our racists are more willing to shout it out loud, or our racists like baseball more, or racists from elsewhere in the region are more likely to come here to see the only MLB team in New England. Just a few possibilities.

Torii Hunter's contract keeps the racists away obviously.

...it may be one of only a few ballparks where racists feel enabled (correctly or not) to act out in this way.

If you were to travel city to city as a person of color, you would feel a spectrum of welcomeness/unwelcomeness.

Seems Boston was the lease welcoming to him.

Tickets and food and drink are so overpriced at the games -- that's why I don't go to the games. So I guess John Henry needs all those rich white racists to make him even richer.
