Stop & Shop sets up early shopping time for people over 60

Stop & Shop announced today that starting Thursday, only people 60 or over will be allowed to shop at its stores between 6 and 7:30 a.m.

We’re making the decision to offer this every day of the week to allow for community members in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which better enables social distancing. They’ll also be shopping prior to any other customers entering.

Stores will have one designated entrance for shoppers during that period. The chain says it won't be checking ID but asks people under 60 to "please respect the purpose of the early opening - and do the right thing for your neighbors

But it's convenient to be able to stock up on beer and ammo without a lot of young whippersnappers clogging up the aisles.

Unless you mean ammonia, I don't know what you are talking about. Since when does Stop & Shop sell ammunition?

I know this has been a growing request lately, but I'm not entirely sure how this helps. I guess the thought is that seniors with COVID-19 would be too sick to shop? I'm just worried that putting them in a group will make them think they're safe, when they still aren't.

Isn't the better option to allow only those 60+ to do online/call-in grocery shopping?

Fewer people around = less risk of transmission
Fewer people at those hours = less risk
No younger people (who may or may not be adhering to social quarantine, or people who are asymptomatically infectious) = less risk

Every move that's made is about minimizing risk and reducing the potential load on hospitals. Not every move has the same reduction of risk.

It's not for the seniors with COVID-19. It's for the seniors WITHOUT the disease, who are at high risk, but who are not sick now. Most seniors are in this situation.

Allowing only those 60+ to do online grocery shopping is an appalling idea.
What about young people who are especially vulnerable to COVID for reasons like asthma or chemotherapy? What about all the young people with disabilities that interfere with grocery shopping, or even a temporary problem like pregnancy or a broken leg?

...people in high risk groups that are under 60?

Young people in high risk groups have all the options they did before, only those options won't be so overloaded because some seniors will be doing their own shopping. Maybe they'll only have to wait 2 days for a grocery delivery, instead of 3.

Yea, right. You go in but do you come out.

In my Stop &Shop I was told that robot was to detect spills which I find amazing if true

That was back in the days when supermarkets had food in them.

On what time you get there @SwirlyGrrl. Working overnights I'm always there early and shelves are stocked.

But it will take cooperation from all shoppers, especially the ones with twenty or more items who sneak into the twelve items or less express line. They have no shame and will show up claiming they are shopping for their elderly neighbors.

First hour of the business day will be open to seniors only. And the stores will close an hour early for restocking.

So seniors who might be borderline on getting up and out early have to go between 6 & 7:30 for this benefit?

Some seniors are early risers because they find themselves not sleeping as much.

What am I missing? The stores get cleaned overnight - disinfected, yes? Then the seniors get into the stores first just after this cleaning and then after they leave, the unwashed masses can go in to buy all the toilet paper and other panic buying items.

My dad is 69 and retired and he LOVES going to stores early in the morning. He likes getting there before most other people and getting all his errands done early. So this is perfect for him.

I'm buying up all the toilet paper and selling it to millennials for $5 per roll:)

In fact - we used to do our main grocery shopping Sunday mornings right when the store opened at 7 am. No one there and the shelves were restocked (mostly).

May have to take that habit back up.

When I got the email from Stop & Shop recently about this, I was very grateful. Then I realized I do half my shopping at Trader Joe's (Coolidge Corner), and I'm completely locked out from certain food items because they get cleaned out every day during the first hour or two. That's when the store is crazy-crowded, so I don't go in then (too risky for a senior). By the time I go in, no pasta, no frozen fruit, no lots of things.

So I sent Trader Joe's a suggestion via their web form that they do something similar to what Stop & Shop did. Of course I realize their systems and scale are different so I have no idea whether it's even feasible, but it would be nice.

If you'd like to send a suggestion to Trader Joe's, the web page for their general-purpose contact form is at: https://www.traderjoes.com/contact-us/product-feedback
