Venerable Dorchester roller-skating rink seeks donations to stay afloat until it can reopen

Who doesn't love Slow Jams?

Dorchester's Chez-Vous Roller Skating Rink, which dates to the 1930s, has launched a GoFundMe page to help it pay bills while it remains closed due to Covid-19.

With no foreseeable reopen date, we are asking our community for help in these uncertain times.

Your donation will assist in managing expenses with hopes to sustain Chez-Vous until we are allowed to open our doors again. From March until August, we have maintained as best we could. We ask for your help so that we can survive this pandemic and come together as one big family once more.

Chez-Vous's Rhoades Street rink, behind the B-3 police station, dates to the mid-1930s, when it was known as the Morton Arena. In 1935, it got a new name: Chez Vous Rollerway.

Some of my best adolescent memories were made here. Meeting up with friends, skating and holding hands with my first crush, waking up super early on Saturdays to get the newest sneakers to wear there just to replace them with skates, haha. Violence aside, this place has been a cornerstone for Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan kids for generations. My grandmother skated here, my mom and uncles skated here and all of us grandkids did as well. I even brought my son when he was an infant for a birthday party. And the only place to this day where you can get delicious $1 fries. This should really be a landmark

United Skates explains the impact of skating on culture and it's importance to the community. Because of gentrification, we are losing many of these safe spaces and it would be awful if Boston lost it's rink.

I would have bet $1000 it was Mattapan.

It is about 50 ft from Morton St, which I feel is the unofficial but official start of Mattapan. I honestly think they (the owners) even consider it Mattapan

I think they said Dorchester because businesses and real estate are trying to get away from using “ Mattapan” as address because of reputation it has. I kinda got that feeling. I live in Mattapan Lower Mills area and I see houses on my street for sale that say listed in Dorchester . I also once seen this exact skating rink on Groupon with location saying “ Franklin Field South” legit. I’m like ummmmm..... they fear ppl will not buy or consider going if they know the location.

Many of the homes in Mattapan (Lower Mills section) were originally Dorchester 40-50 years ago. My parents deed and electrical/gas bills all say Dorchester, now it’s zoned as Mattapan (Same for many long time neighbors). Not sure when it became Mattapan, but growing up I don’t remember it being Dorchester. That being said, if you look at a detailed map of the City of Boston, the Lower Mills area includes parts of Mattapan, Dorchester and Milton.
