Another one of the warehouse cops pleads guilty

The US Attorney's office reports that former BPD Sgt. William Baxter, 62, of Hyde Park, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds.

According to the US Attorney's office, he got paid $9,223 over 15 months for work he didn't actually do.

Baxter is the eighth BPD officer at the Hyde Park evidence warehouse to plead or agree to plead guilty in connection with the overtime scandal there. Nine officers were initially charged, several more have since also been charged.

Baxter is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 21.

Missing cash and drugs from evidence would definitely cause an investigation, especially if they showed up in future crime investigations. A little bit of fraud committed on physical paperwork, that could stay under the radar forever, especially if the bosses are in on it too.

Unrelated to this comment, I will say that the US Attorney's office must have done some good work building their cases to get all of these guilty pleas.
