Petition drive tries to save the public chickens of Eagle Square

WBZ NewsRadio reports on the efforts by Empower East Boston to keep the chickens it was raising in the heart of East Boston's Eagle Square after a city animal-control officer ordered the fowl removed. More than 470 people have signed an online petition.

Although the Eastie Chickens are taken care of and cleaned every day and they do not make any noise, we are being forced to remove them.

I live in Eastie. I love chickens. I love it when neighbors do good shit to help the community.

But did they have a permit? It's not immediately clear to me.

Chicken feed attracts rodents , farms with animals should be kept apart from large populated urban neighborhoods.

The coop appears well maintained, it's as far from buildings as possible...in fact, Eagle Square is like the least dense part of East Boston.

The complainer wants to evict the chickens so he can rent out that little yellow house for $800 a month and charge extra for a straw bed.

Yeah, those chickens must really annoy the neighbors. Said neighbors being refrigerated trailers at a loading dock, and pickup trucks parked behind a cinder block wall.
