So this guy was a 2nd in command for how long? And neither mayor nor the Commissioner nor the DA nor the sheriff not the City Councillors at large did anything until this year?

He held the rank of Superintendent and was the Chief of Staff to the Commissioner. The highest uniformed officer, reporting to the Commissioner, is the Superintendent in Chief. Next in line, based on the succession for acting Commish would be Superintendent of the Bureau of Field Service (read all things patrol/field operations), then the remaining Superintendents by seniority.

Did you even read the article? Their daughter and the wife's sister both refute all of these allegations - sounds like there is more to the story than the very misleading title of your post.

Yes, we know that one of his daughters and the sister deny the charges. They, however, are not the alleged victim in the case, who spoke publicly for the first time since the whole case became public, which was the point of the article.
Whatever happened, the whole case is pretty sad and might not have had to become public had Marty Walsh done a halfway decent job of looking at or even just asking about White's internal-affairs files, instead of basically just signing off on something in his rush to get out of town.
I think Marty knew about all of this....
and he simply didn't think it would become public the way it did.

You need to read up on abusive family dynamics
It isn't uncommon for an abuser to enlist the support of a favored child or other family member to cover for them.
Just as it isn't unheard of for a police officer to get fellow officers to form a nice blue wall around all their problematic issues.
Think about it for a second - then do some reading on the subject.

It's hard to tell whether this was a couple like Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, where one person gets accused of being abusive, loses their job in the uproar, and over time the blame shifts to the other person.
The biggest surprise in the story is reading this guy call himself a Black man. Staring at the photo, I still can't see it.

None of this should matter
If (acting) Mayor Janey wants to fire the police commissioner for any or no reason at all, and the City Council goes along with it, that should be the end of the matter. He should not be entitled to a hearing or any compensation at all.
I'd even extend this to all police officers -- they should be directly accountable to elected government, and fireable by a majority (maybe 3/5 majority) vote of the City Council. This democratic accountability would go a long way towards preventing any future "George Floyd" incidents.

That being "acting" mayor has it's limits, as you very much know.
This is a very messy matter. We are talking 20 year old accusations that were (kind of) litigated at the time. Now, if the current acting commissioner got a restraining order slapped on him by his wife (this is theoretical, so I am not accusing him of anything other than being the acting commissioner) we would be talking a completely different issue, and the issue would also be different if Walsh was still mayor, as department heads, by and large, serve at the mayor's discretion.
