After trip to Washington, Worcester hospital employee no longer has a job; first IDed for her role in an attack the night before the riot by own daughter

UMass Memorial Medical Center reported this evening that one of its caregivers who went down to Washington "is no longer a part of our organization."

The hospital did not provide further details, but MassLive.com identified her as Therese Duke, arrested the night before the deadly Capitol riot for allegedly trying to grab the phone of a black woman who had been videoing Trump supporters protesting in the streets of Washington. Duke also got a bloody nose when the woman punched her.

She was first identified by her own daughter, after video of the fight went viral:

Stunned to see her mom, Helena decided to tweet about the video and identified her family members as the people in it. "hi mom remember the time you told me I shouldn't go to BLM protests bc they could get violent...this you?" she wrote.

H/t to anon for the additional links.

The mother goes to Trumpwad Traitortime, the daughter goes to BLM protests. Out with the old, in with the new. Things are getting better.

It's going to be the plot of at least two Hallmark Christmas movies this year.

Don't they all have the same plot?

ohmygod!!!

I shouldn't be surprised that somebody took the time to do it.
It's beautiful.
It belongs in crucial cultural bookmarks, along with the Seth Meyers Boston Accent movie

What was her exact role in the attach?

But yeah, keep your fascist hands off our phones, or we hit your head.

Do you think she was punched for being white? What a stupid statement - lots of video trying to take the woman's phone and got punched. Poor white lady. Yes - keep your fascist hands off our phones

You lied to your family. You get your nose completely busted because you tried to take someone’s phone. Your kid calls you out for being a liar, a hypocrite and a nut job. Millions witness all this online. Then 4 of your fellow terrorists get killed in a pathetic attempt to overthrow American democracy because a bloated orange trust fund brat conned your dumb ass. Now you have no job, no daughter, Democrats control the senate and Biden will be president after he kicked Trumps ass.

This woman, like all Trumpers, is beyond pathetic.

And we *really* need to treat it like one. No, not talking sympathy, just straight up professional mental health help.

Pushing folks off of social media or jailing them might set an example for future people who might want to do this, but the problem itself doesn't go away. It will just fester if we do nothing about it.

Jailing wont fix the problem, mental health will. Help them understand their own personal demons so they can be set free of them.

I'll repeat it again because I get dogged for this stance because it appears like its sympathy. Its not, the just need to have their head checked and fixed.

How exactly does one do that? It's really hard to get anyone to address their mental health without their cooperation - without them acknowledging that there is a problem.

the disinformation ecosystem, which includes right-wing propaganda media as well as the tech platforms that algorithmically sort people into bias bubbles for profit, which has much worse effects on the right than left: it radicalizes Trumpian bigotry and ignorance.

I’m glad Trump got deplatformed, but it’s troubling to put that currently virtuous censorship power in the hands of a few giant corporations. It could too easily go the other way.

The best way absent this kind of reform and maybe tech oligopoly breakups is just winning at the polls and expanding voting rights. I’m pessimistic about our ability to fix stupid and hateful, and the accompanying mental illness and exploitation of people that already suffer from mental health issues.

...reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. You know, the one that Ronald Reagan trashed in 1987? Reinstate it and bring it up to speed for the internet.

And please, let's skip the nostalgia for "decent" Republicans. As soon as Nixon was out, they started to regroup. Ronnie "Government IS the problem" Reagan was the start of this horrible 40 year reactionary backlash, but it goes back further.

Looking at those pictures from the Capitol, I found the funniest to be the kid wearing animal skins, a police vest, a police shield, and a wooden staff like Gandalf has. Then I looked him and saw some live videos with the kid and it was clear that he was not right in the head. Turns out to be the son of a judge in NYC.

They need to be treated as if they are addicted to powerful drugs and detoxxed off of the misinformation, lies, and jingoistic racism they have been snorting for too long.

Like they do with people who were in cults. Remove them from the environment, cut off the propaganda stream. Only after their amygdala has settled down and the constant fight or flight response has subsided, can they begin to think rationally again. Only then is there a chance that they can take in divergent information. Slowly.

If seventy million Americans have a mental health problem, then humanity has a mental health problem. Which, of course, is true, but not very helpful.

Certainly many of the MAGAs et al could benefit from therapy and cult deprogramming, but what is the prescribed course of treatment for the white supremacist ideology embedded in this movement’s core?

up

So, if we conceptualize this in terms of all of us having mental health and it sometimes being better and other times being poorer, then yes, we can say that people who are threatened by people different from them and have a hard time having boundaries and getting on with their lives have poor mental health. That would summarize most right-wingers.

But we also want to be careful, and make sure we aren't sending the message that hatred is a psychiatric disability, or that people with psychiatric disabilities are particularly prone to this sort of thing. Most people with psychiatric or neurodevelopmental disabilities DON'T engage in hatred and bigotry, and actually are highly represented in anti-racist, anti-discrimination etc. movements. The psychiatric disability community in general doesn't appreciate people responding to hatred by saying "oh it's a mental illness," because they're not doing that shit.

You are assuming that they can't believe two contradictory things at the same time. But many can, and do, and it's a veritable way of life for cultists like these.

Only a clown would believe this statement.

My favorite thing is watching the MAGAs post identifying videos of themselves rebutting this imbecilic conspiracy garbage saying “no, guys, it was really us MAGAs, Proud Boys etc that did this! Give us all the credit!”

Funny though how Ashanti - an officer who was doing her job, after all - was arrested, and I cannot find any record of the Duke mom being arrested. Why's that? On the other hand, Ashanti and Helena ( the daughter) -opened a gofundme, but the Duke mom didn't open one, though she was fired, just as Ashanti....
