Kind of old story but still relevant: Basically, in a city full of college students and bars surrounded on three sides by water, it's unfortunate, but some will fall in the water. And many of the bodies pulled out of our local waters aren't young men in the bloom of their college youth, but people with some serious problems, including homeless people who literally just roll into the Muddy River and Fort Point Channel from their embankments on the shores. They don't get the attention that college men do because they don't have networks of family and friends who very publicly search for them, in particular online (nothing wrong with that, but a story about an evil killer stalking college men and pushing them into the water loses something when you realize there are a lot more victims that don't match that description).
...Fascinates the entire nation the way that the killing of less TV-ready people ever could. Lots of people have a sliding scale on the value of human lives, especially those who scoff at the idea.
The one right on the water. There was also a party for the Boston Food Bank with hundreds of party goers getting sauced up. I am Lucky that when I was in college in Boston with all the risky behavior I engaged in that I didn't get seriously hurt. So I'm not sure a serial killer is more likely than a small fraction of the young adults making bad choices and paying the price.....and also no one seems to be upset about the youth getting shot in Roxbury , Mattapan, Dorchester and Hyde Park each week.
The smiley killer conspiracy is extremely problematic and hurtful. White people became obsessed with it because the “victims” were all white men.
It’d be nice if those idiotic people who believed in Smiley Face cared just a little bit about the very really and very factual homicides that befall young men of color in this city.
Just burns me up when young white dues get attributed to the alleged SFK while houseless and marginalized folks wash up in similar circumstances and people just shrug and say it happens.
Maybe it's because houseless lost touch with the legal next of kin or marital partner that officials have to notify about death. I don't consider someone homeless and addicted as someone who has the money to make the media make their death a newsflash. Unless their a celebrity.
The SFK theory always discounts the deaths of the homeless.
To be clear, back in the day my counter was always that bodies of people who fell into Boston Harbor have been discovered since colonial days, so the killer would have to be wicked old.

No, there is no Smiley Face
How do you know?
I've written about this before

The same way the murder of 4 attractive college kids in Idaho...

My work party was at that hotel last night

Thank you Adam, for nipping in the bud all that smart-alecky foolishness about Smiley Face Killer.

The Smiley Face Killer is
The Smiley Face Killer is actually alcohol, which makes people fall into the water.
Whoa
That's exactly what I would expect the Smiley Face Killer to say.

SFK Strikes Again
What are we up to now?
Well...
...you're up to two, and that's two too many.

Make it go away.
Make it go away.
Whitey kept the Smiley Face
Whitey kept the Smiley Face Killer out of Southie.
Pretty good joke!
Works on a few different levels & tailored for the audience (hyperlocal) = sophisticated comedy!
