Covid-19 numbers heading up again

Covid-19 hospitalization rate in Massachusetts

The state today reported 4,376 new Covid-19 cases, compared to 2,985 just the day before.

Statewide, 6.2% of tests are now coming back as positive for Covid-19 - the first time that rate has been above 6% since early February.

In Boston, the test positivity rate is now 9.3% as of yesterday. The city had set a rate of 5% as one of its "threshold" statistics for bringing back mandatory indoor masking and other measures. However, other stats, including the rate of Covid-19 hospitalization in Boston and the number of ICU beds filled with Covid-19 patients remain below city benchmarks.

As shown in the chart, Covid-19 hospitalization numbers have been rising of late as well, although they remain well below the peak of 3,306 on Jan. 14.

Out at Deer Island, meanwhile, the number of Covid-19 viral particles found in MWRA sewage is once again beginning to rise after declining for a week. This sewage sample has proven to be a predictor of Covid-19 cases ten days or so out because people often begin excreting the virus before they realize they might be sick and need to be tested.

Well, I win the office pool again.
Not a good thing overall, but it is easy money being a realist versus being an an optimist.

With mask mandates eliminated and social distancing tricky to maintain, this isn't a surprise. Let's hope a week or two sees levels brought down again.

This is bad. Not sure if true but lots of rumors, that this was a Covid spreader.

Everyone is required to be vaccinated too. Fortunately, the worst symptoms are flu like.

Luckily the latest variant seems to be less problematic, hope it stays that way....

A vaccinated/boosted friend with little risk spent weeks in the hospital and is likely to need MONTHS to get back on her feet....

I got it the week before labor day and luckily had very mild symptoms but was congested for 6 months after.... Vaxed/boosted/and very active healthy...

ugh... hope your office mates are all doing ok!

Who saw that coming?

What do you think should have been done?

acknowledging my lack of depth of knowledge in epidemiology, the approach really seems to be based on results. cases go up every time we relax restrictions.

maybe everything will work out and maybe there really is a process oriented strategy going on, but it really is unsettling to watch the same thing happen over and over again.

Would it stop the rise? Probably not.

Would it have slowed the rise considerably? Yes.

Is there any public health reason to take people seriously when they whine about wearing masks, and make tough-guy noises about how We Must Learn To Live With The Virus? No. They are dumb babies.

In a civilized country we would be wearing masks on the subway during flu season. As it is, even though I’m vaxxed and boosted, my heart condition means I am now completely unwilling to take public transportation and terrified of the grocery store. Apparently that’s a small price to pay for people who don’t like their face being itchy.

Well, I mean yeah. It's a small price for them to pay. They dgaf what price anyone else has to pay.

Or are you once again playing the troll?

Heck, I’ll ask again. What should “they” be doing that isn’t being done now?

A week and a half ago, you seemed to be pressing for a mask mandate, except that you said you weren't.

Still dying to see what you were saying at the time, assuming you weren't just straight up acting the troll.

Your "questions" are consistently strawmen and bad faith. I am not obliged to provide you with fodder for your bullshit factory.

You were completely trolling last week.

But hey, if you can't be a part of the solution, you can always be a part of the problem, no? Let's fault leaders for not putting in a mask mandate while claiming that they shouldn't be putting in a mask mandate. That's world class strawman if you ask me.

I just sent my sample to Deer Island for testing.

I don’t see how we get past this in the Northeast. So many people traveling to, from and around the region. Second booster shots are not available to everyone. We had mini-outbreak in my workplace about 4 weeks ago, despite everyone being vaxxed/boosted. Most people have voluntarily gone back to wearing masks.

I have been getting those exposure notifications multiple times a day now. I used to get one every few weeks.

I had covid in January and felt like I had been hit by a car. Body aches, headache, sore throat and that was about it. I am vaxed with one booster. I hope this gives me a little immunity from this current Omicron variant.

One another note, my phone pinged me to let me know that my phone was close enough via bluetooth someone that had reported they had covid. It prompted me to test (after 5 days and the exposure was 4 days ago when I got it). I tested negative.

Do you use MassNotify? If so, it's good to know it works. I've had it running pretty much continuously since they released it, and never had a ping.

I'm becoming convinced the only reason we've hardly had any cases at my (small) company is that nobody's testing unless they're symptomatic. We stopped weekly testing at work weeks ago.

Yes, Mass Notify.

On the increase in fully vaccinated (orange) cases but the relatively stable differential? Because that certainly seems, if cause for being cancelled, worthy of comment and concern.

Is this why we're not seeing public officials banging drums about bringing back the mandates?
