Causeway Street shut for more than an hour by what turned out to be a pressure cooker sitting on the sidewalk

In a city with a bad history with pressure cookers, police took no chances when a report came in about a suspicious device just sitting on Causeway Street in front of the Garden and North Station around 1:30 a.m.

Live Boston reports police immediately shut the street and called in the bomb squad.

Units determined that the package was no threat to the public and was described as a “hoax type device” by first responders.

I’m always annoyed when police describe innocuous objects as “hoax devices” (like those Mooninites from so long ago!). A hoax requires intent to deceive.

I understand the prudent approach, I suppose, of not assuming an unexpected object is harmless. But, there is no “hoax” just because people are scared of household objects found on the street.

And how often do you think that people dispose of pressure cookers on a non-residential street like Causeway Street?

Meaning what? That you did not live there, but at somewhere else that you consider to be the same thing? That while you were there, you were practically living rather than actually living? And were you disposing of your household goods on the street while you were practically living there?

Convenient for sporting events and the commuter rail, in any event.

Pressure cookers found outside at any location in Boston not on a trash day are no longer considered innocuous objects. It will probably be another decade or so before people forget that pressure cooker related tragedy.

It's also good training on evaluating and disarming potential explosive devices.
