Henderson School student indicted on charge of punching principal into unconsciousness

WFXT reports a Suffolk County grand jury has indicted Laurette LeRouge, 16, for assault and battery on a person over 60 for allegedly punching the school's principal in the head repeatedly in November.

The names of juvenile offenders are normally withheld, but LeRouge was charged as a "youthful offender," which means her case is open to the public and she can face adult penalties if convicted.

Acting Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden explained why he sought the status for LeRouge:

Our priority is to keep young people out of the court system through diversion programs and other alternatives to prosecution. But the severity of this attack justifies an approach that will provide a judge more sentencing options than are available under traditional juvenile procedures.

Innocent, etc.

they should have just charged her as an adult

she’d still just get a slap on the wrist but at least it woulda scared her a bit

But isn't that what happened here in all but name? Is trying juveniles as adults even an option in Massachusetts courts?

There isn't any difference except that these cases are heard in the juvenile court. Overall juveniles are actually detained for more time than adults for the same offenses.

Scare her a bit? So the next time she rages and gets the urge to beat someone nearly to death she'll instead sit back down, take a deep breath, and think about the possible consequences?

She needs help with her mental illness, for her well-being and the safety of others.
