MBTA bus catches fire near Forest Hills

Darragh Murphy captured the flaming bus on Washington Street, reports:

Kudos to the driver for safely driving their ON FIRE bus into the @MBTA yard. Also kudos to @BostonFire for arriving in less than a minute and putting out the fire.

An MBTA exec I certainly would not want to be. This ship is sinking. Abandon ship.

Bad look, sure, but plenty of busses didn’t catch on fire. I’d say the overwhelming majority don’t catch fire, but I’m sure more people who never ride the T will use it as an excuse to further bad mouth the entire service.

That’s a fairly low bar to set…

Yeah, and plenty of trains didn't derail, and plenty of passengers didn't have to jump into the Mystic, and plenty of track workers didn't get killed in any accidents recently. The MBTA's doing an amazing job!

Yeah, I'd say so but I don't have the massive privilege of not taking it like snarky pricks like you. Shit happens, don't be a fucking drama queen, you aren't nearly as clever as you think you are. Go to reddit if you want to be a useless dick.

I recommend a trip to the ER for whatever crawled up your ass and died. The person you just went off on is criticizing the MBTA; your response was overflowing with stupid, pointless, baseless personal insults. I don't know why you, as a user of the MBTA, are angry at someone who points out its issues anyway.

The MBTA: The Overwhelming Majority of it Doesn't Catch Fire™

Does the T care about their passengers and employees?
It’s supposed to be a transit agency to move the commonwealth. That should be the main objective. Keep service moving.

MBTA was better off as a separate entity.

Are other departments on the T having all these issues?

Electric or diesel?

Compressed natural gas.

That does not look like the CNG bus, it looks like a brand new (well like 3-4 years old) diesel-electric hybrid...the CNG have a hump on the roof at the mid/rear the hybrids have the full roof extension like you see in the photo.

But I thought all the buses at the Arborway yard were CNG.

The difference between a CNG bus and a hybrid bus is that the roof is much larger on a CNG bus to hold the CNG tanks. The hybrid buses have lower roofs as they have no CNG tanks (but do have electrical equipment)

Also, the CNG buses are numbered from 1600 to 1774. The hybrids are numbered from 1775-2118, 1400-1459, 3000-3005, and 3100-3159.

Is it time to start mapping T fires and related disasters like you do with criminal activity? MBTA data scientists (if they exist) could learn some patterns... we could call them heat maps...

A bird flew into my window pane...I see this OL shutdown going very well.

Crimson flames tied through my ears rolling high and mighty traps,
pounced with fire on flaming roads using ideas as my maps.

The driver should have driven the bus into the nearest dumpster as a metaphor for the T's current status. Glad no one was hurt!

No need for Orange Line bus schedules - just look to the sky for smoke trails to indicate the current location of your bus.

when your bus is approaching - no need for apps

Good, because Transit app started charging to view all lines

Make the bus driver a hero. God know they deserve some credit for all the abuse they take from crazed passengers from being spit on to being assaulted for trying to collect fares.

On July 23 a CT Transit bus caught fire while parked in a yard in Hamden, CT. It was an electric bus, with lithium ion batteries, made in 2021 by New Flyer, model XE40 Xcelsior CHARGE. No one was on the bus, but two transit workers in the yard were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and a firefighter for heat exhaustion. The bus had last been in service on July 20. One source said it "melted" to the ground, that's all that was left. Reportedly the MBTA has ordered the same model to be based in North Cambridge, to replace the trackless trolleys, although I can't confirm that.

CT Transit - electric bus explosion in Hamden, CT

The MBTA is planning to get 550 of these buses in the future, once the North Cambridge, Quincy and Arborway garages are converted to electric bus operation.

Lets fold the T into the Mass DOT, the people who brought you the falling ceiling in the leaking tunnel. USDOT needs to take control from the RICO organization which runs this state from their clubhouse on Beacon Hill.
Time to call in the Koreans to manage the project.

You must know something. How do you know so much?

There's the T in one image for you: drivers who can get a flaming bus into the yard safely, and management who ensure that they need those skills.

The MBTA will also be shutting down all bus service for 30 days to clean them and fix the AC.

This site's slanted coverage conspicuously fails to address the Baker administration's plan to provide MBTA bus passengers with pointed sticks and marshmallows. Typical.

I find it odd Fox news 25 was on scene in less than a minute. Coincidences or conspiracies? How did this bus catch on fire in the first place? What went wrong? Who will be held accountable?

They used the same bus-b-q photo that a passing bystander took that everybody else used.
