I’ve not seen Newbury Street bustling like this since even before the pandemic on a tax free weekend. Pedestrian plazas are common in European countries but our car-centric culture here makes them a rarity.
For those naysayers, it’s pretty easy to allow deliveries to be made outside of normal shopping hours and nearly all buildings on Newbury Street have alley access to boot making it even easier than DTX to receive deliveries.
Seriously.
It was like a pre-9/11 Newbury Street Holiday Stroll kinda numbers.
The Newbury St League should push for buried stantions at each intersection from Arlington to Hereford that go up every weekend.
I was in Montreal over the weekend
..Where there several streets were seasonally closed to automobile traffic (Rue Sainte-Denis and Rue Sainte-Catherine to name two that are similar to Newbury). They allow delivery trucks to enter some blocks from 6AM to 10AM, but then at 10AM, the bollards and flexposts go up. Deliveries can still be made, but they have to wheel them in from the nearest cross st. This could be more easily done on Newbury, especially since the stores there tend to have public alley access from behind, which some of the pedestrianized streets in Montreal lack.
That was great
We were there in June with our squad (sons and their partners). The awesome part was that it was tricky to get somewhere quickly because there were so many people out on the street.
That has to be better for merchants than the car traffic.
