Hanging up the cheese slicer on Blackstone Street
By adamg on Sat, 12/02/2023 - 5:27pm
The Fort Pointer said farewell to Roy of Harry's Cheese and Cold Cuts, 98 Blackstone St. at Haymarket, who is retiring later this month after 40 years in business.
A true gem, widely beloved.

I thought about it
Figured I'd give readers a break.
Sad to see him go
One of the things I miss working from home full time is an occasional trip to Harry's. He's a great guy and the shop was the kind of fun hole in the wall that will be hard to replace. Best of luck to him in his retirement!
He will be missed
My wife has been going to Roy since she worked downtown in the 90's. Early in our marriage she needed a large order of cheese and called him up. She just said, "Hi Roy, it's [name]." I gave her a hard time wondering, how many [name]'s he must know. But sure enough we went in to pick up the order and he knew exactly who had called and had everything ready.
We'll definitely miss him.
P.S. He always wore a shirt with the name Harry on it to sort out the locals from the tourists. (Harry was his father-in-law.)
Was Harry the one
who used to be out front of the shop in the nineties saying "two for one, mix and match!" ?
Am lucky to have met him and found his shop
Always visited his shop when I could get to Haymarket and he was open for business. Always a pleasure to visit, discover cheeses and just enjoy the moment in the middle of the hustle and bustle of city life. Roy is proof that a great man can also be a humble man.
As for his wares, none were ever so tasty as the rosemary ham that he sold many years ago.
